The New England Patriots' defense might be a little less terrible starting this week. Newly-acquired cornerback Aqib Talib, who came to Foxborough two weeks ago via a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is eligible to play this week against the Indianapolis Colts after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. (photo: Scott Smith, Flickr)The addition of Talib certainly can't hurt, as the Patriots' defense, particularly in the passing game, continues to get embarrassed by subpar offenses, most recently giving up 31 points and 481 yards to the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.New England will get its first real look at Talib Wednesday when the team returns to the field for practice. Until then, Patriots coach Bill Belichick and his staff after working out the non-physical kinks."We'll spend time with him, trying to get him caught up in terms of terminology and scheme and that type of thing," Belichick said Monday. "We...

Patriots Receive Roster Exemption for Aqib Talib, Which Ends Nov. 19

The Patriots will have one week to get their new cornerback acclimated to their defense without it affecting their 53-man roster. New England received a roster exemption for Aqib Talib, which means that he can practice with the team until Nov. 19 without him counting against their roster. The Patriots released linebacker Jeff Tarpinian on Monday, but they can sign another player...

Belichick on Andrew Luck: He’s playing like a very experienced and poised player

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had his usual mid week conference call today, as well as his mid-week presser. One of the topics that came up was the play of Indianapolis Colts rookie QB Andrew Luck. Predictably, The Hoodie praised Luck's play thus far in the 2012 season."It looks like he’s getting better every week, playing with more and more confidence...

Aqib Talib Will Help Shore Up Patriots Defense With Switch to More Man Coverages

There was a lot of criticism heaped on the Patriots when they traded a fourth-round pick in 2013 for troubled cornerback Aqib Talib and a seventh-round pick. But after watching how terrible the Patriots were in pass coverage on Sunday, you can’t really blame them for jumping on the deal. The transition from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the New England Patriots may not be an easy...

Tom Brady takes jab at Jets for releasing Danny Woodhead

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady still wonders why the New York Jets released running back Danny Woodhead.  Brady took a small jab at the Jets during his weekly radio show with WEEI in Boston. “I remember his first game,” Brady said via the New York Post. “We kind of joked on the sideline, [former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien] and I, we kind of...

Does L-U-C-K Spell R-O-Y

As Andrew Luck leads the Indianapolis Colts closer to a playoff berth this season, he also continues a march toward Rookie of the Year. As of this writing, the Colts were 6-3 and in 2nd place in the AFC South, and had won four in a row. Luck was leading the way with a [...]

Devin McCourty’s Knack for Game-Changing Turnovers Makes Him a Desired Playmaker in Patriot Secondary

FOXBORO, Mass. — Earlier this season, Devin McCourty felt the ire of Patriots nation. Every move he made, every play he was on the field — which was almost all of them — the watchful eye of Patriots fans everywhere was scrutinizing him. That extreme examination hasn’t subsided completely, but each week McCourty has slowly chipped away at the negative perception surrounding...

McCourty INT in End Zone Saves Patriots Bacon

The Buffalo Bills came to Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots and while the team had been reeling a bit dropping four of their previous five games they did come to play. And if it wasn’t for New England S Devin McCourty being in the right place at the right time the Bills may have had their second win over the Patriots in the last two seasons.  Instead they lost 37-31...

Grigson gives Colts winning hand in 1st year as GM

Ryan Grigson came to Indianapolis with a plan to rebuild the Colts. A little more than eight months after cutting Peyton Manning, Indy (6-3) is in an improbable battle to make the playoffs. One of the reasons has been Grigson's penchant for finding talent. The first-year general manager has made all the right moves: drafting Andrew Luck, surrounding him with young teammates...

In The Red Zone – November 13

Something Has to Change I hate beating a dead horse, playing the same tune and writing the same thing seemingly week after week, but something has to change with the defense on this team. The acquisition of CB Aqib Talib from Tampa Bay is a start and he will help as soon as he is caught up into the system but it’s totally unfair to pin the hopes of turning the entire secondary...

Panic In the Streets as Patriots Stumble Through Another Lost Season

Note – The BSMW Messageboard is offline at the moment for repairs. It may take a day or two to work out some issues there. Feel free to try out the BSMW Facebook page in the meantime, or weigh in down below in the comments. I’ll get this out of the way quickly. It’s impossible to look at the Patriots defense right now and say that their performance is acceptable. They’ve...
