Whether it was the tale of the magic black wristband, or the birth of a superstar, Nick Foles made history on Sunday in Oakland. Foles threw seven touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 49-20 win over the Raiders, joining the likes of legendary quarterbacks such as Sid Luckman, Adrian Burke, George Blanda, Y.A. Tittle, Joe Kapp, and Peyton Manning. At the moment, the seven touchdown passes are the only statistic that would ever have Foles mentioned in the same category as these quarterbacks. But with a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3 and over 250 yards passing, Foles topped Peyton Manning’s opening day performance earlier in the season that had NFL fans up in arms. While Foles displayed all of the attributes that one would want to see in a starting quarterback, such as arm strength, precision, accuracy, and leadership, the question of whether or not Foles should permanently replace Michael Vick as the starting quarterback remains. Brian Bahr/Getty Images The Raiders defense was ranked 9th heading into Sunday’s game. Their weakness was their secondary and Foles exploited that throughout the game. However, the Raiders, as a whole, aren’t a very cohesive unit. The possibility of this being a fluke is plausible. Nonetheless, throwing seven touchdowns warrants more minutes at quarterback for Foles. How could you possibly bench a guy after he makes history? Tom Coughlin and the Giants got off to a horrendous 0-6 start. Many coaches would be on the hot seat after beginning the season with 6 straight losses. However, the fact that Coughlin has two super bowl rings rejects any thoughts of firing the two time super bowl winning coach. This is a similar case. If Coach Kelly benches Foles, everyone is going to wonder what could be. Sure, he has had some less than mediocre games this season. But at least ride him while he’s hot. Foles’ memorable game in week 9 was unlike any quarterback performance ever. Foles was the first quarterback to ever throw seven touchdowns and finish the game with a perfect passer rating. Foles was errorless and leading a team that had gone without an offensive touchdown for the two previous weeks. Foles has got to be named the starting quarterback sooner or later, right? Wrong. Since Sunday’s win over the Raiders, Chip Kelly has refused to name a starting quarterback and continues to state that health will be the determining factor in regard to who gets the starting job. This should not come as a surprise, however, as Kelly went throughout preseason without naming his starting quarterback. While Kelly debates over who the starter will be, Vicks’ hamstring continues to be an issue, which means Foles should have plenty of opportunities to prove that a fluke did not occur on Sunday.
