Despite previous reports that Michael Vick had distanced himself from Nick Foles in the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback competition, it now appears the two are basically even for the starting job. On NFL Live Tuesday, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio reported that the two signal-callers were “neck and neck” for the team’s quarterback job. Additionally, rookie Matt Barkley is exclusively running with the third team and is not part of the main competition. Reports on Monday claimed that Vick had been “tremendous” thus far and was impressing new head coach Chip Kelly. While that may be true, it would appear that Foles is not out of it yet. The Eagles were a disaster last season, finishing 4-12 and Vick was as disappointing as anyone. In 10 games, the 33-year-old completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 2,362 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His quarterback rating was a woeful 78.1. He added 332 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Foles played in seven games in 2012. He completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,699 yards, with six touchdowns and five interceptions. His quarterback rating of 79.1 was nearly as bad as Vick’s, but that came as a rookie. Vick and Foles are two very different quarterbacks, so the decision will likely come down to which direction Kelly wants to take his offense during his first season in Philadelphia. This will be one of the most interesting position battles to watch during the preseason and each rep will surely be dissected until the season kicks off in a few weeks.
