The Pittsburgh Steelers have multiple people in the headlines right now, but LaMarr Woodley is getting more talk than anyone on the team. Woodley’s conditioning has been in question due to his injury issues and poor performance during the past two seasons. Todd Haley, the Steelers offensive coordinator, is also in the news as he is a candidate for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching position. Also, Omar Khan, the Steelers salary cap guru, is a finalist for the New York Jets open general manager spot. Losing Omar Khan could really hurt the Pittsburgh Steelers. Khan is one of the smartest people in the NFL when it comes to working with the salary cap. He currently holds the position of Director of Business and Administration for the Steelers. Over the past few years the Steelers have gone through multiple salary restructures that were the mastermind of Khan along with general manager Kevin Colbert. With two minds like Colbert and Khan it was inevitable that the Steelers wouldn’t be able to keep both of them around. Right now Khan is one of four finalists for the open general manager position with the New York Jets. Todd Haley is also a potential finalist for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching position. Haley coached with the Cardinals in 2007 as their offensive coordinator and the Cardinals are looking for an offensive minded head coach to replace Ken Whisenhunt. Right now the Cardinals are looking at their defensive coordinator Ray Horton, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden (brother of former NFL head coach Jon Gruden) and Todd Haley. According to NFL.com Haley enjoys coaching with the Steelers and doesn’t want to leave unless the opportunity is right. NFL.com reported that Haley set a “very high” price in negotiations with the Cardinals. Most likely he set his number at what they would have to pay for him to leave the Steelers. Many fans have turned on Todd Haley after the second half of the season fell apart for the Steelers. However, the first 9 games of the season Ben Roethlisberger was on pace to have the best season of his NFL career. If you take Roethlisberger’s stats from the first nine games and stretch them out of complete a sixteen game season Roethlisberger, had he not got injured, was on pace for: 65.5 completion percentage, 4,065 yards, 30 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and only 31 times sacked which would be the lowest total of Roethlisberger’s since 2005. However, when Ben came back from injury his completion percentage fell to 56.9 percent and his interception rate doubled. Also, following injury which could be due to injuries to the offensive line as well Roethlisberger’s sacks went up dramatically. During the first nine games Ben was sacked 18 times, but during his last four games he was sacked 12 times. So for those who are ready to run Haley out of town you may want to take a look back at the first nine games of the season. The Steelers only lost three games out of their first nine and two of those are on the defense in Tennessee and Oakland where they couldn’t stop the Raiders’ and Titan’s offenses. Following the season the one player that has had the most headlines is LaMarr Woodley. Steelers’ fans have seen what JJ Watt and Aldon Smith can do during the playoffs and know that Woodley has the potential to be that dominant of a player. However, watching Woodley sit on the sidelines during the majority of the past two seasons due to hamstring injuries and look ineffective on the field is causing people to turn on him. Earlier this week I went as far as to say that Woodley needs to get a new training regimen and now it may be falling perfectly in place. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Tom Shaw, who trains Ike Taylor in the off-season, would like to work with Woodley. Taylor swears by Shaw and credits him for the shape he is in each season. In fact, Ike Taylor may be in the best shape of any player on the Steelers and he is almost 33 years old. Tom Shaw should also be credited for getting Mike Wallace ready for the 2012 season. Wallace held out through training camp and the pre-season and many fans were certain that he would struggle on the field due to missing so many workouts. However, during that time he was missing with the team he was training with Shaw and came into the season in very good shape and was the leading receiver on the team in 2012. Steelers president Art Rooney II has said that the team will look into the injury issues that the team has suffered the last two seasons and try and find a cause. He may want to send the Steelers 53 players to Orlando to train with Shaw during the off-season. Three former/current Steelers worked with Shaw: Ike Taylor, James Farrior, and William Gay. During his NFL career Farrior rarely missed a game and Taylor held the current consecutive games played record for corner-backs before breaking his ankle. When Taylor missed the Steelers week 14 match-up with the Chargers William Gay took over as the holder of the longest consecutive games played streak. Steelers Need ‘Best Player Available’

While four teams remain in the NFL Playoffs, I’m already interested in where the Pittsburgh Steelers are going in terms of the 2013 season. Last night, my partner-in-crime and I were very excited to be joined by Shane Hallam of www.draftcountdown.com to help us breakdown some possible directions the Steelers might go during the NFL Draft in April. Shane did an excellent job of...

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Expects Several Changes This Offseason

Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert talked to members of the Pittsburgh media on Wednesday and below is a summation of what he said based on the tweets sent out by Ed Bouchette and Bob Labriola. Colbert reportedly referred to the team being 8-8 in 2012 several times in his talk, meaning of course that it was unacceptable. Colbert said, "If we don't change...

Latest Manti Te’o Story Now Includes The Name Of Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu

"Bizarre". That is the only word I know how to describe the whole Manti Te'o alleged fake internet girlfriend hoax story right now. If you have been hiding underneath a rock, I am not even going to try to rewrite the story up until this point. If you need to be brought up to speed on it, I highly suggest you read the full story that Deadspin broke earlier on Wednesday...

The Steelers Could Find Their Next James Farrior from Inside the AFC North

In 2002 the New York Jets decided to let James Farrior walk in free agency. Farrior was drafted by the Jets in the first round of the 1997 draft, but was considered a just after five seasons with the team. The Steelers rarely go after free agents unless the player and price is right. They signed Farrior in 2002 and he was the team’s defensive leader for 10 seasons. Farrior led...

Steelers 2013 Draft: Trading Back may be Best Option

If there is one thing that most draft experts can agree on it’s that the 2013 NFL draft is deep in terms of quality players. What can also be agreed on is that the top of the first round lacks the big time talent that is typically associated with the NFL draft. In fact, the draft is deep in second round talent more than anything. Therefore, the Steelers best bet for the draft may...

Please Don’t Ask Why the Steelers Aren’t More Active in Free Agency

We aren’t even there yet but I feel a pre-emptive strike is necessary for those fans who will inevitably say, “Why aren’t we signing player x or player z in free agency?” The free agency period for the 2013 season will not open up until March but already I’m seeing the comments about what the Steelers may do in free agency. This is exactly what they will do, very little...

Steelers Sign CB Justin King To A Reserve/Future Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed cornerback Justin King to a reserve/futures contract on Wednesday, according to Bob Labriola on Twitter. King ended the season on the Steelers 53 man roster after being signed in the middle of December after DeMarcus Van **** suffered a shoulder injury that would end his season. King is a Pittsburgh native and a graduate of Gateway High and was originally...

Kelvin Beachum Could be Steelers Left Guard In 2013 and Beyond

The Steelers are building a younger and more athletic offensive line in front of Ben Roethlisberger and the 2012 draft may account for three starters in 2013. First round pick David DeCastro is the Steelers right guard of the future and second round pick Mike Adams will start at tackle in 2013. Adams, who will be entering his second NFL season, will play left or right tackle in...

Sounds like Steelers won’t use the franchise tag on Mike Wallace

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Mike Colbert says it’s doubtful they’ll use the franchise tag on any of their players this offseason. Colbert: “Very doubtful” they will put franchise tag on anyone because “I don’t think we have too many franchise players.” — Ed Bouchette (@EdBouchette) January 16, 2013 This likely means wide receiver Mike Wallace will hit the...

Steelers Unlikely To Franchise WR Mike Wallace

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert told reporters that it’s “doubtful” that they’ll use their franchise tag on any their free agents this season, according to Ed Bouchette. “I don’t think we have too many franchise players,” said Colbert of his team. The assumption is that the general manager is talking about wide receiver Mike Wallace, whose contract is set to expire at the...

Not All Pittsburgh Steelers Fans Are Rooting Against the Ravens in the 2012 AFC Championship Game

This is an unpopular opinion that might cost me my seat at the cool-kids table among Pittsburgh Steelers fans. I want the Ravens to beat the Patriots Sunday. The Ravens and Patriots meet in the AFC Championship Game for the second year in a row. It’s the first time the same teams have met in the AFC title game for two straight seasons since the Browns and Broncos in 1986 and 1987...

Pittsburgh Steelers 2013 Needs

Have we overrated Ben Roethlisberger just a bit? In 9 seasons as a starter, he’s had a top-3 scoring defense on his side 6 times. In the 3 years he hasn’t, he’s missed the playoffs, including this year. They weren’t bad or anything this year, allowing 19.6 points per game, 6th in the NFL, including the fewest yards of any team in the NFL. The offense was more of the problem...

Report: Todd Haley Told Cardinals It Would Cost A Lot For Him To Leave The Steelers

There is still no word as to who the Arizona Cardinals will decide on to be their next head coach, but it is looking more and more likely that it won't be Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who reportedly interviewed with his former employer last week. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports on Monday, that according to his sources, Haley gave...

Is Haley Still In The Running For The Cardinals Job Now That McCoy Is Off The Market?

On Monday, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported that a source had told him that Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley told Arizona Cardinals team president Michael Bidwell what he wanted and what he needed to become their new head coach. And that Haley set the asking price very high as he really doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh unless it is really...
