Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey getting carted off the field against the Tennessee Titans (photo credit: Gene Puskar/AP Photos) The Pittsburgh Steelers have only played one game this season and they have already placed three players on season ending injury reserve. Center Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Larry Foote and running back LaRod Stephens-Howling will miss the rest of the season. Pouncey went down with a torn ACL and MCL, Foote went down with a ruptured bicep and Stephens-Howling went down with a torn ACL. Why have these players gotten hurt so early in the season? Is it just being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Is it just a giant mix of bad luck? Or is it because those players were not properly prepared? If you ask me I think that it’s a combination of all three things. Bad luck and being at the wrong place at the wrong time were the main reasons that Maurkice Pouncey got taken off the field in a stretcher against the Tennessee Titans. Right guard David DeCastro fell on Pouncey’s leg early in the first quarter in the first game. Once again the Steelers are without their All-Pro center. Then not long after Larry Foote was taken out of the game for the Steelers. Just another case of bad luck for the Steelers? Foote went to make a tackle and came up and went off the field. Then after him the Steelers’ leading rusher in the game LaRod Stephens-Howling blew his ACL on a seven yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger. You could say that that the Steelers are just the blunt of bad luck but in my honest opinion I believe that these Steelers’ players and potentially other players have been ill-prepared for the first game of this season and many other games since the beginning of the Mike Tomlin era in Pittsburgh. This has been blatant in many occasions. How many games have the Steelers lost to teams that they were clearly better than? If they were prepared better then there is no doubt that they would have won. It is the job of the coaches especially the head coach to make sure that his players are ready to play the game and this week was another example of how the Steelers have been consistently one of the most under prepared teams in the NFL in the past few seasons. The injuries that occurred this week could have been avoided! Pouncey is hurt because of the unpreparedness of David DeCastro who missed a cut block and torpedoed his knee. Foote and Stephens-Howling are hurt because they were not properly ready to make tackles and cuts. And more injuries will happen to the Steelers if they keep going into games unprepared.
