Plaxico Burress has been around the NFL for quite some time now. The wide receiver has had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, New York Jets and even prison. Burress recently signed a 1-year-deal with the Steelers in an effort to bring some kind of life back to his NFL career. Burress is a wide receiver who really faded into the shadows of the league in recent years and Burress’ chances of having a real impactful season with the black and gold are slim. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ receivers this upcoming season could be poised for big things. Even with the loss of Mike Wallace, the Steelers’ wide receivers are still very solid and could be a dominating force if the offense can really click this year. With that said, Burress seems like an odd man out when it comes to dominating defenses. The Steelers even drafted Markus Wheaton, wide receiver out of Oregon State, and Justin Brown, a wide receiver from Oklahoma, to give the receiving core some more options. The Steelers also have Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders and Jericho Cotchery, who will be the three men making the most impact for the team when it comes to wide receivers. Burress is really going to have to work for playing time and even a roster spot. The Steelers’ will probably keep four receivers with them like they did last season, which limits Burress’ chances significantly. Burress does have a few things to like about him. One, Burress is a veteran and understands the game because he’s been around it for a long time. Experience can’t be taught but it’s something that definitely doesn’t guarantee you a roster spot or playing time. The second thing to like is his size. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger loves having big receivers and Burress is solid when it comes to size. If Burress does make the roster expect to see him play mostly in the red zone. His size should benefit him in the red zone and he could fill the void of an injured Heath Miller. Burress told Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his job is to “catch the football”. That is essentially what he’ll need to do to if he wants to make any kind of impact on the Steelers’ team this year. Burress will most likely have a small roll with the Steelers’ but we’ll wait and see what Burress has to offer as training camp and the season are rapidly approaching.
