God bless him, he's trying

The Redskins are a team associated with a lot of NFL Draft and free agency failures in the past 18 years. Let’s say the worst of it began with Desmond Howard in 1992 and later expanded to include Al Noga, Tom Carter, Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, Andre Johnson, Dana Stubblefield, Deion Sanders, James Washington, Patrick Ramsey… Lord, we all know I could go on and on. Let’s just leave it at that.

But the Redskins are not the only team to have problems with high profile acquisitions, only the most likely. Earlier this week the New York Jets cut DL Vernon Gholston, their first round pick — 6th overall — in the 2008 NFL Draft. The first round selection made Gholston a rich man and his contract was written in such a way as to make it easy for him to become much richer.

Gholston had a clause built into his contract (before the 2010 season) that would award him a $9 million bonus if he simply recorded one sack. Or caused a fumble. Or a recovered a fumble. Or caught an interception.

In 45 NFL games, he did none of those things. Zero. They even moved him from linebacker to defensive end and tried to devise schemes specifically to help him out. Nothing.

In 3 years with the Jets Gholston played in 45 of a possible 48 regular season games, starting five. In that time he recorded not one sack. Not one forced fumble or fumble recover. Not one interception. Nothing but 16 tackles in 3 seasons.

But there is one good thing I can write about Vernon Gholston: He wasn’t drafted by the Washington Redskins.

Thank goodness Snyderrato isn’t still calling the shots or the Redskins would have offered him a $10 million signing bonus in free agency by now.
