Chip Kelly debuts as the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach August 9th against the New England Patriots in a highly anticipated preseason matchup. Yes, a highly anticipated preseason matchup. In the context of former Philadelphia 76ers’ player Allen Iverson, referring to his rant about practice; preseason? We talkin’ ‘bout preseason? Think about the ever-growing media attention both teams have surrounded themselves with before training camp has even begun. Chip Kelly and his dynamic football operations, a five ring quarterback circus, Kelly being recently penalized by the NCAA, the Patriots inking Tim Tebow, Rob Gronkowski’s off field issues, and now, Aaron Hernandez’s attempt at one-upping O.J. Simpson. And, this is curtailing controversy by two teams in less than two sentences. What will Lincoln Financial Field advertise the game as in order to attract spectators, the craziest preseason show on Earth? We talkin’ ‘bout preseason? Also, Kelly knows the Philadelphia Eagles’ history, especially them losing to Bill Belichick in Super Bowl XXXIX. Hey, if you can’t beat them, join them. Both teams will have a joint-practice with one another on August 6th and 7th in Philadelphia. Kelly and New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick have become close friends over the past few years. Belichick would even take ideas from Kelly prior to drawing up a plan for each Sunday. Not from video cameras either. Let that sink in for just a moment, and this gives you an idea of how intelligent Kelly is as far as the game of football is concerned. The joint practice may not make immediate sense to average NFL fans, but the move is a wise one. The frequent hurry-up offense of the Patriots and the soon to be introduced, new revolution offense of the Eagles both can relate to another. Who knows, this could become a common trend for the Eagles, and the league for years to come. What can be accomplished and gained from the joint practices will soon be unveiled in the near future. Maybe not in the game, but practice.
