(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) When Alex Smith is good he can be very good. When Smith is very good, the San Francisco 49ers are practically unbeatable.
While the staples of San Francisco's success this season remain a rock-solid defense and the NFL's top-ranked rushing game, Smith's play at quarterback has been a key variable that's put the 49ers over the top in a string of lopsided victories.
The first-place 49ers begin the second half of the season Sunday against the St. Louis Rams at 6-2 with a 1 1/2-game lead in the NFC West. The six victories have come by an average margin of 20 points, and Smith has a 120.0 quarterback rating in those games.
The eighth-year veteran is coming off one of the best performances of his career as the 49ers return from their bye week, but Smith knows his strong season to this point will ultimately be judged by what he and the 49ers do the remainder of the year.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith threw a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of Sunday's 24-24 tie against the Rams while playing with blurred vision before coming out with a concussion.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Smith connected with Michael Crabtree six plays after he began experiencing blurred vision on a 1-yard keeper early in the second quarter...
49ers coaches work “daily” with rookie RB LaMichael James on handling punt returns. Frank Gore ranks in the top-five in the NFL in yards per carry and is signed through 2014 while Kendall Hunter is entrenched as the backup. With Ted Ginn due to reach free agency in 2013, James’ future could be returning punts and functioning as a change-of-pace back. He’s yet to be active...
San Francisco is doing their part and winning. They need to continue to work on consistency on offense, especially from Alex Smith. They'll win the division easy, they just need to make sure they're ready for the postseason.
I'm sitting at 84-49 heading into the weekend. I need to have a huge run to get over .750 for the season.
As the San Francisco 49ers come off their bye week, John Harbaugh should be fairly happy with how the team has played so far. At 6-2 San Francisco has shown their ability to be the best team in the league in a win in Green Bay, but once again struggled in a loss to the Giants. While Alex Smith will never be in a Pro Bowl he has done his job, not forcing passes and being...
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer Frank Gore looks at his three 100-yard rushing performances, four touchdowns and overall output in the season's first half and is quick to praise an unheralded offensive line that's helping him do it.
Helping San Francisco's entire offense shine, too. These big boys block all over the...
Tweet Now in his fourth season with the San Francisco 49ers Michael Crabtree has hauled in 15 touchdowns, including two in his last game. On Sunday the Niners face a St. Louis Rams team who has been relatively stingy in allowing touchdown passes with eleven through eight games. If Crabtree does manage to find [...]
JEFF BARTL STATS Writer The San Francisco 49ers' stellar defense is a major reason they enter the second half of the season in control of the NFC West, at times overshadowing an offense possessing an efficient quarterback and the NFL's best running game.
Alex Smith, Frank Gore and the rest of the 49ers' offense look to take advantage of a St. Louis Rams team that hasn...

The Niners and Rams return from their bye weeks only to find they'll be facing each other in Week 10. Can St. Louis pull the upset at the 'Stick?
The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to play a 3-5 St. Louis Rams team with a battered offensive line and an aging running back, Steven Jackson. Still, to hear 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh tell it, he's not overconfident heading into the Sunday game to Candlestick Park. "They present all kind of problems along the (defensive) front, the linebackers. (They are) very good in...
