The Good: Not much can be seen good when you lose by 35, but it’s preseason, and that’s what the preseason is for. Rookie QB Blaine Gabbert showed some flashes of being good, but overall needs a lot of work. “I think he showed a little poise leading the team down and we had a couple of drops,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. “The good thing is I see him on the sidelines saying ‘my bad, I could throw it better.’ I know one thing, it’s great exposure for him and great experience.” Gabbert played the entire first half and completed 9-of-16 passes for 85 yards and no interceptions. The Jags trailed by 10 at the half at 19-9, and it was the 3rd and 4th strings that got battered around. Josh Scobee hit a nice 41-yard field goal. Sam Swank kicked a 40-yard field goal.
The Bad: A lot. The offense managed just 193 yards to allowing 476 to the Pats. They were just 3-for-13 on third downs, and held the ball for just 25:05 to 34:55 for the Pats. Passing was tough all night, as the Jags had just 95 net yards passing to 335 for New England. The defense needs a lot of work, as the Pats marched up and down the field for most of the second half, scoring 28 points. Todd Bouman was just 2-for-10 for 35 yards. It was a tough night, but again, that’s what preseason is for and there’s a lot more practice and football before opening day on September 11th.
