Raiders hiring OC Luke Getsy eliminates potential Justin Fields trade

After discussions between Las Vegas and Kliff Kingsbury stalled, the Raiders are expected to name Luke Getsy as their next offensive coordinator. Hiring the former Bears OC eliminates a potential trade for quarterback Justin Fields.

Getsy was with Chicago for the past two seasons, struggling to maximize the former first-round pick's potential, which is one reason the Bears fired him in January.

"If the Raiders decide they need to add [quarterback] competition, Getsy's hire likely eliminates a potential option," The Athletic's Tashan Reed wrote. "Las Vegas has been one of the teams speculated as a potential destination for Fields via trade, but Fields and Getsy had well-documented friction with the Bears. A reunion wouldn't make much sense."

Although Fields has some upside, trading for a player who bickered with the OC wouldn't be smart. Plus, the 24-year-old failed to clearly establish himself as a franchise QB in three seasons, posting a 10-28 record and a below-average 82.9 passer rating.

Assuming the Raiders release Jimmy Garoppolo, Aidan O'Connell — who threw 12 TDs and seven picks in 11 games —  is their starting QB. While star wide receiver Davante Adams believes in the 25-year-old, they should bring in some competition.

Las Vegas holds the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, so the top QB prospects will be off the board at this spot. It's a deep class, though, meaning the Raiders could find a potential starter in the second round. The Athletic's Dane Brugler predicted they'll take Washington's Michael Penix Jr. with the 44th pick in his latest mock draft.

The right QB could rejuvenate Las Vegas' offense. Along with Adams, it also has WR Jakobi Meyers, who set a career-high in receiving TDs (eight in 16 games) last season.
