Former NFL TE Bennie Joppru is from Dickinson, North Dakota. He went to Minnetonka High School, and we can assume he was one of the best, if not the best, football players in all of North Dakota considering he earned a spot playing for the Michigan Wolverines in 1999. Photo Credit: Mike DeSimone Freshman season Joppru caught four passes (from Tom Brady) for 51 yards and two touchdowns. In his sophomore and junior years Joppru wasn’t much of a factor combining for 23 receptions with 125 yards and a touchdown. However in 2002, Joppru became one of John Navarre’s favorite targets. The 6-4 TE had 53 catches for 579 yards and five touchdowns, and was named AP All-America Third Team. In the 2003 NFL Draft the Houston Texans selected Bennie Joppru with the 41st overall pick. Looking back almost any pick other than Joppru would have been better. Joppru only appeared in one game for the Texans (and that was in 2006) and then ended up on the Seahawks where he would appear in 18 games and record no offensive stats. This is what we call a bust. Other receivers Texans could have taken: WR Anquan Boldin TE Jason Witten TE Visanthe Shiancoe WR Brandon Lloyd TE Antonio Gates Regardless, the Texans have seemed to recover. -Schotz
