Even when he was little, he was big. His Super Bowl ring is the largest to have ever been made.  His ring size is 25 – just five more than the Super Bowl XX it represents. William Perry, more affectionately known to Chicago Bear Super Bowl Shuffle era fans as “The Fridge”, played for the Chicago Bears for nine years and spent his final year in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. As a freshman at Clemson in 1981, he helped take the team to a national championship and was a three time All-American during his four years with the Tigers. In 1985, he was a first-round draft pick as a defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears, 22nd overall. Interestingly, whenever the Bears were in goal line offense Coach Mike Ditka made the decision to switch Perry’s position from defensive to offense as a fullback. The genius in Ditka’s decision enabled Perry to become a blocker for Walter “Sweetness” Payton and score himself. In Super Bowl history, he became the first inside lineman to rush for a touchdown, rounding his career touchdowns up to three. Off the field, Perry was adored by a nation. His gap-toothed smile emblazoned the advertisements of Coca-Cola and was splashed across the covers of newspapers and magazines. His dance moves and lyrics in the “Shuffle” made him all the more loveable as America learned that this rookie was ‘no dumb cookie’. Unfortunately, Perry’s recent health has not kept up with him over the years. An ESPN.com commentary from last year sheds light onto Perry’s failing health, his dependence on alcohol, and his constant battle with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Still, for the 1985 Bears nation, he is the beloved gap-toothed rookie that helped the team shuffle on to win the Super Bowl. This Fridge is more than just a household appliance. -Rusk
