As Ryan reported, the Washington Redskins released Hunter Smith. They brought in a journeyman who had a brief stint with them before. And, they’re trying out kickers. And, they’ve signed a couple guys off of their practice squad.
Look, I know they need to do all they can to win these last three games, but changing their Special Teams’ personnel now amounts to a grain of sand in the Virgina Beach shoreline. And, it’s good to see Eric Cook and Selvish Capers get a chance to show what they can do. But these changes aren’t going to help fix the core problems of an anemic offense and poor tackling. They aren’t going to provide the Redskins’ defense with players who are suited to the 3-4 scheme either. We don’t even know if any of these guys – Cook, Capers, Sam Paulescu – will be invited to training camp next year. (We do know Paulescu can tackle, big-time.)
I hope Cook and Capers get on the field. The newest members of the active roster won’t be the only players trying to secure an opportunity to make next year’s squad – everybody who gets on the field the next three weeks will. I can’t imagine how many free agents will be brought in to seriously compete at every position except Left Tackle, Tight End, Running Back, and possibly Cornerback. I especially can’t wait to see whom the Redskins bring in to play Nose Tackle, if they stay with the 3-4. And, I wonder if Vegas will publish odds on Malcolm Kelly being healthy enough to make next year’s opening day roster. (If you’re pulling for Kelly, play the lottery or burn your cash. You’ll have better odds.)
Yea, the free agent signings will be interesting to see, assuming there is a 2011 training camp. Until then, the ‘Skins are just compensating for injuries and changing for change sake.
Oh yea, it’s Dallas Week. We hate Dallas. Go ‘Skins!
