San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews returned to practice on a limited basis on Thursday, and he was involved in contact for the first time since he broke his clavicle on Aug. 9, U-T San Diego reported.

Chargers coach Norv Turner did not reveal much about Mathews status, but the fact that Mathews is participating in some contact drills in full pads suggests he might play in Sunday's game against Tennessee.

"I'm exactly where I want to be," Mathews said, according to U-T San Diego. "It's ultimately up to coach Norv (Turner's) decision. ... I feel good. The trainers, everybody, think I'm healing up fine. It's going to be a day-to-day thing."

The team will release his official status after Friday's practice.

Mathews started 13 of the 14 games he played last season, when he rushed for 1,091 yards.
