Saints head coach Sean Payton had his contract voided by the NFL two weeks ago. Since then, there has been plenty of speculation on where he might land. Places like Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Diego and Dallas have been brought up repeatedly. Since the news broke, I’ve said that I don’t think he goes anywhere but New Orleans and that they’d work out an extension that the league would approve. That seems to be the case, as GM Mickey Loomis said he expects to have Payton re-signed, but according to Mike Triplette of The Times-Picayune, the Cowboys may be a bigger threat than expected and a report from NFL.com says Payton is keeping his options open. Triplette writes: From talking with sources throughout the past two weeks, it seems like the only serious threat that could pry Coach Sean Payton away from the New Orleans Saints would be an offer from the Dallas Cowboys. There is no indication that Payton is unhappy in New Orleans or looking to leave the Saints. But the fact that Payton’s children live in Dallas would be a major factor if he winds up having a choice to make between the two teams – in addition to his high esteem for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the aura of the Cowboys’ franchise, among other factors. That would be a big blow for the New Orleans Saints, as they haven’t had the season that they’d liked to up to this point. They sit a game below .500 but the start of the season was awful. They seemed to have figured things out on defense, at least enough to stop the scoring. They are the only team in NFL History to give up at least 450 yards per game this far into the season, averaging 469.3 yards per game given up. They haven’t been the same explosive team they were in the past with Payton making the calls. Drew Brees has said time and time again that he misses the consistency and play calling of Payton. While no one has said that Vitt couldn’t do the job, they know Payton does it better. The report of course would have to come down to Jerry Jones firing current head coach Jason Garrett. Jones’ son, Steven, says that it’s ridiculous to say Garrett is on the hot seat. If it came down to it, and he had to pick between a Super Bowl winning coach and a coach that can’t manage a play clock, I think it’s safe to say that he’d go for the winner.
