The Cowboys ensured one of their best players will remain in Dallas for the foreseeable future, giving cornerback Trevon Diggs a lucrative contract extension on Tuesday.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Dallas and the 24-year-old are finalizing a five-year, $97M contract extension. It includes a $21.25M signing bonus, could be worth up to $104M with incentives and makes him the fifth-highest-paid CB in the NFL, via Spotrac.

Although it's an expensive move, it's smart for the Cowboys to extend Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowler, because he's one of their top defensive players and entering his prime. Since joining the league in 2020, he has tied with J.C. Jackson for the most interceptions (17) in the NFL. In 17 games last season, he allowed a career-low in passing TDs (three), per Pro Football Reference.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently conducted a survey featuring coaches, executives, scouts and players who ranked Diggs as the eighth-best CB in the league. They believe he still possesses untapped potential.
"I think he's gotten better at gambling overall. It's still a hindrance to his game, in my opinion," an NFC personnel member said, via Fowler. "I think if he can be more calculated with his ways, he can be viewed more like an Asante Samuel Sr."
Samuel Sr. made four Pro Bowls and won two Super Bowls in 11 seasons with the Eagles, Patriots and Falcons. If Diggs' career follows a similar trajectory, that would bode well for the Cowboys.
Diggs could reach the next level this season since CB Stephon Gilmore, a former Defensive Player of the Year, can mentor him. So Dallas' defense—which allowed the sixth-fewest points in the league in 2022— could continue to excel.
