Jordan Woy tweets that the Dallas Cowboys will in fact be using their franchise tag OLB Anthony Spencer for second consecutive season.
Woy adds that the two sides are expected to work on a long-term contract extension.
Spencer, 29, tallied a career-high 11 sacks in 14 games last season for the Cowboys.
It’s interesting that the Cowboys are willing to allocate a large amount of money to Spencer given that they’ll be moving to a 4-3 base defense next year. Spencer’s value on the open market would likely be derived from the fact that there are limited options at outside linebacker, which is really a premium position.
We had Spencer listed as the No. 15 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
