Former University of Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley is expected to become the new wide receivers coach for the Dallas Cowboys, according to a report by ESPN. Dooley had three consecutive losing seasons, the longest in UT history, and struggled to a 15-21 overall record during his tenure as coach of the Volunteers before being fired in November. Dooley is expected to replace Jimmy Robinson, who has been the Cowboys' receivers coach, but was conspicuously missing from the rest of the Cowboys' coaching staff this past week at the Senior Bowl. The team has not made an announcement yet about Robinson's status with the team, although a source told ESPNDallas.com that he may become a consultant to the team. Robinson, whose star pupil, Dez Bryant, has become Dallas' leading receiver, has been with the Cowboys for the last two seasons, following being part of the Green Bay Packers staff that won Super Bowl XLV. Dooley will be reunited with Dallas head coach Jason Garrett. Both previously worked together in 2005 and 2006 as assistants with the Miami Dolphins under then-head coach Nick Saban, with Dooley as tight ends coach and Garrett as quarterbacks coach. Saban left Miami to become head coach at the University of Alabama. Bryant, Miles Austin and Jason Witten were part of a receiving corps that was third in the NFL this past season with 4,992 yards and yards per game (312), behind only the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions.
