Geno Smith didn’t have anywhere close to a stellar performance in preseason. In fact, in his first start he threw 3 interceptions and ran out the back of the end zone for a safety. At this point, anyone would agree that Smith needs all the help he can get. Well CBS Sports is reporting that Geno feels otherwise. In a recent interview, Smith was asked how he was going to prepare for the matchup against star Bucs CB Darrelle Revis and he replied: “I mean, I don’t think it’s necessary. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. You pretty much get the idea of what kind of player he is based on his reputation.” Yes you read that correctly folks. Smith doesn’t feel that he needs to prepare for Revis because he already knows his reputation. I’m just as flabbergasted as you are, but it gets better. Smith added that he was going to rely on information from the team and former Jets starting QB Mark Sanchez. “I mean, we all know about Revis. Basically from talking to Mark, talking to our personnel guys around here. If you talk to anyone in this locker room they’ll let you know when healthy [Revis is] one of the best if not the best corner in the game. He’s the guy you definitely have to pay attention to on the field.” As it turns out, Darrelle Revis doesn’t take Geno Smith idly and his response to Smith’s comments proves as such. “I don’t understand why [laughing] he didn’t study me? [Laughing more] Because I will be on the opposite side. But I don’t know what their gameplan or their preparation is. And personally I don’t know what Geno’s preparation is but I would hope if you’re playing against another opponent you should [laughing once more] study everybody on the opposing team. I’m studying him. [still laughing] Just to let him know, I’m studying him.” I’m not exactly sure what Geno Smith is thinking, but the Jets should either put a muzzle on him or give him some tips for dealing with the media. There are just some things you don’t say out loud.
