Down and Distance:
Michael Hoomanawanui is the newest Patriots tight end, but he might not have been the first choice for the job.
Mary Paoletti of CSNNewEngland.com reports that Kellen Winslow failed his physical when the team brought him in for a look on Tuesday.
We don’t know if he would have been signed had the physical gone better. Winslow’s visit was being viewed as the Patriots doing due dilligence for their emergency list, but perhaps that became the idea once the team found out the condition of Winslow’s knee after multiple operations over the years.
Winslow has to now search elsewhere if he wants to find a team for the 2012 NFL season. Chances are Winslow will land somewhere but that might not happen until a starting tight end is injured.
Paoletti also reports that Visanthe Shiancoe will be placed on injured reserve with the designated to return provision that would allow him to rejoin the team after eight weeks.

Quarterbacks: Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett
Tom Brady is, well, Tom Brady. Need I say more? Brady has been as good as anyone in the league but entering his 13th year, some have questioned how much he has left. Obviously he has a couple seasons left in him and when he is doubted, he usually shines. No worries for me there. Mallett had first round talent coming...
Will Brandon Lloyd become another 1,000 yard receiver for Tom Brady and the Patriots Offense?
With the 2012 NFL regular season officially underway, rosters are set and new stars are ready to be born. For every emerging star, however, comes a player who won’t live up to expectations and takes a step back from their previous success. Each team across the league will experience...

Previously on Outside the Boxscore, we featured a post about New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady starring in a commercial for the brand of Ugg boots.
In the below video is the latest commercial that features the Super Bowl winner trying to hock them to a more male crowd:
Even though their season opener is just days away, Bill Belichick is still doing his due diligence and looking for ways to improve the Patriots' roster. Reports surfaced Tuesday that the Pats worked out quarterback Mike Kafka and will work out tight end Kellen Winslow. New England made a couple of official roster moves, though, signing running back Lex Hilliard and releasing...
#1 - New England Patriots
It's my rankings and I'll be a homer if I want to. But seriously, outside of the Baltimore area, you'll have a hard time finding someone who won't concede that the Patriots were the best team in the AFC last season. They were a Gronkowski injury away from being the champs. The Pats restocked the defense, and got Tom Brady a legit...
According to Danny O’Neil of The Seattle Times, it doesn’t look like the NFL will be suspending Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch for being arrested in the offseason for DUI.
“It appears increasing unlikely that he would be suspended.
“Generally, if a player is going to be suspended for an upcoming game, the league tries to notify the team by Monday or Tuesday. There...
The Seattle Seahawks may be without their starting running back when they open their season in Arizona on Sunday.Marshawn Lynchhas had troubles with chronic back spasms this week, putting his status for Sunday’s game in question and possibly in doubt.
The trickle down affect in fantasy football leagues is great, as this could put more on the shoulders ofRussell Wilson. The Cardinals...
Way, waay back this spring, right after rookie mini-camp, we tried a Pats roster preview. Now, for your reading pleasure, we have taken the time to review our predictions.
(Keep in mind, people: this was on May 14. That’s a long time ago, like before “the Red Sox” served as a punchline for “What has 18 legs, no head, and refuses to live up to expectations?”)
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots hope to avoid the dreaded post-Super Bowl loss curse in 2012-13
The New England Patriots come into the 2012 NFL season as one of the favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLVII. On paper, it is the one of the best teams in football that returns its starts, added new ones and shored up its weak points.
Of course, in sports nothing ever...

Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 19) - If Russell Wilson is as ready as he looks, this team will be better than expected.
