EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. Running back Adrian Peterson and Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier have both expressed interest in getting the recovering Peterson action in the preseason. It turns out Peterson's first game action might come in the regular season, according to a report from ESPN1500.com's Judd Zulgad. Zulgad reported from an NFL source that Minnesota plans to keep Peterson out for the entire preseason even though he has returned to practice for the past week.Frazier still hasn't said publicly if Peterson would play in Friday's home preseason game against the San Diego Chargers or the final exhibition game in Houston on Aug. 30. Peterson was activated from the physically unable to perform list last week and has been ramping up his involvement in the Vikings' offense for the past week."We gave him more reps," Frazier said after Monday's practice. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow, but we threw a lot of things at him today and see what he says tomorrow, see how he feels."But according to the ESPN1500 report, Peterson won't be returning to game action at least before the regular-season opener on Sept. 9 at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.Playing in the first regular season game has been Peterson's goal since knee surgery on Dec. 30 to repair torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee stemming from a hit in a Dec. 24 game against the Washington Redskins.Early in training camp, with Peterson rehabbing intensely on the side fields with the team's trainer and strength coach, Peterson expressed hope to get into a preseason game to clear the last mental hurdle for his recovery, taking a hit from a defender and being tackled. Frazier also mentioned he'd like to see Peterson in a preseason game. But the coach wasn't making any promises either.Even after activating Peterson from the PUP list on Aug. 12, Frazier said it was just the next step in the process for Peterson and preached caution on expecting the star running back to return to action at a specific time."I know there are a lot of fans that are very optimistic and excited about seeing him back but for us it's just a part of the process," Frazier said on Aug. 12. "It doesn't mean a whole lot other than he's done a great job in his rehab up to this point. Off to the side with our strength coaches, with (head athletic trainer) Eric Sugarman and his staff. And our medical staff explained to myself and Rick Spielman that the next step for him in the process would be to get integrated with his teammates and that's just what it means. He's done everything he can do on the side, now it's the next step in the process. It doesn't mean in the future he's going to be lining up with our team in the opening game. We don't know that. We have a long time to determine that, this is just another step in the process."Peterson said Sunday he hadn't felt soreness in his surgically repaired knee since being activated and reiterated he hoped to play in the preseason. "Yeah, I wouldn't mind," Peterson said. "To be honest with you, it wouldn't really matter either way. I feel like I'll be ready to roll." But the Vikings have their plan and are sticking to it."We're going to give him a little bit more each day, see how he responds and continue to determine what's the next step," Frazier said Sunday. "Just going day-to-day. We have some ideas of how we want to approach it, but a lot of it depends on how he feels with some of the things we're going to give him this week."Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
