Although Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has maintained that he tore his Achilles tendon during conditioning drills, staff members in attendance at a basketball tournament in which Suggs played told ESPN.com that Suggs sustained the injury playing in that event.

"He got hurt Sunday (April 29) prior to the (basketball tournament) championship game," Herman "Sonny" Hoffman, the director of the Akchin Gymnasium in Maricopa, Ariz., told ESPN.com.

Hoffman said it was "more than likely" that was when Suggs tore his Achilles.

"My staff saw the whole incident," he said. "It was the condition you'd describe for a torn Achilles. He had no movement, no step, and it swelled up right away."

Hoffman was in charge of filling out an incident report on the injury. He asked whether Suggs needed emergency medical services, and Suggs said he did not.

Hoffman said other staff members also said Suggs sustained the injury during a game.

When confronted with those comments, Suggs told ESPN through his agent, Joel Segal: "Simply not true. I hurt myself doing my conditioning test."

Conceivably, the Ravens could withhold payment if a player misses action as the result of an injured that occurred during non-football-related activities.

The Ravens have declined to comment on the injury publicly, but, according to ESPN.com, team officials privately have said they would not withhold payments from Suggs, no matter how he was injured.
