Coming from the New York Jets, one of the most high-profile teams in the NFL, the relaxed Tampa Bay Bucs may be exactly what Darrelle Revis needs to get back to Pro Bowl level (Credit: AP Photo). After suffering an ACL injury at the end of his 2012 season and being traded to a new organization in a different conference, one would assume that Darrelle Revis is somewhat anxious about going into the 2013 season. Turns out, that is the opposite of what Revis is feeling as he enters the preseason with his new team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Revis clearly expressed this yesterday when speaking to the Times Sports correspondent. “Going to Tampa is great. I look at it as a new chapter in my football career….The organization’s great. It’s real laid back down there. It’s not a lot of pressure as it is in New York.” There are two main things to take away from this quote. The first of these is the fact that Revis feels the Tampa Bay organization is “laid back.” Yes, it is just the start of the preseason and the team shouldn’t be piling on the pressure too early on, but there should be a sense of urgency as a team begins to prepare for the regular season, especially after finishing 7-9 in 2012. Of course this is only one player’s opinion, a relatively new player at that, trying to evaluate a foreign organization early on in the preseason. Moreover, coming from New York, Revis has had exposure to one of the most pressure-intensive teams in the NFL and so his “laid back” might still be intense to the average player. This is a fact that Revis is quite aware of. “It can be tough. I got drafted as a junior and I didn’t know anything about New York or about the media, coming from being born here and going to the University of Pittsburgh. It’s a different market…The next thing you know you’re a celebrity” That can certainly be a lot to take in coming into the league as a high-profile rookie. Perhaps this relaxed approach is exactly what Revis needs to get back to the Pro Bowl this year after missing out in 2012.
