New York Jets coach Rex Ryan delivered his usual mix of wit and sarcasm during his conference call with the New Orleans media on Wednesday -- while also throwing in plenty of praise for his brother Rob, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Saints coach Sean Payton. When asked for his thoughts on facing Brees, Ryan said, “Yikes. That’s pretty much it.” “Dude’s a surgeon, man,” Ryan said, expanding on his initial scouting report. “He picks you apart, can make all the throws, all the verticals and things, poised, sees the field, so accurate. Other than that he’s not very good. Extends plays, he’s as good as it gets. “I’m just happy Miami never got him (in free agency in 2006), because we would have had to play him twice. Now, it’s only once every four years.” Ryan later added, “If he saw us play pass defense last week he's probably already left to come here. I have a feeling we'll play a little better than we played this last week -- obviously, we'll have

New Orleans Saints kick off rust, beat Buffalo

The New Orleans Saints, relaxed coming off their bye week, were able to cruise to a 35-17 victory against the overmatched Buffalo Bills. Drew Brees had himself a game throwing 5 touchdown passes and the defense was able to hold the Bills’ offense to less than 20 points, a feat that none of their opponents had been able to do this season. There were some encouraging signs coming...

Rex Ryan: Graham, Gronk sometimes impossible to cover

BY NICK ST. DENISTwo weeks ago, Rex Ryan had to gameplan for tight end Rob Gronkowski. This week, he's prepping to face Jimmy Graham. You know, just your typical 1a and 1b, in no particular order."Oh man, they’re both outstanding," Ryan said Thursday, via NewYorkJets.com. "Gronk is probably a little more physical down the field than Graham. Graham has probably...

Week Eight Jets’ Defensive Snap Count Analysis

Going back into games to look for more insight and evidence is usually a fun and useful tactic, but it took a lot out of me to look back at the Jets-Bengals massacre.  Regardless, I came away with more interesting snap counts of defensive players in Rex Ryan’s complicated schemes and I noted where players were lining up.  For that spreadsheet, click here.  Let’s put aside...

Rex Ryan Predicts Dee Milliner Will Be Best Rookie CB By Season’s End

Jets rookie cornerback Dee Milliner has struggled and looked awful at times this season, but if you let Rex Ryan tell it, the best is yet to come. While speaking to the media Wednesday, Ryan announced that Milliner will continue to start, and predicted the young rookie would be the best cornerback in his draft class by seasons end. “I will say this, by the time this season...

New York Jets Defensive Line Grade Sheet: Week 8 (Midseason Grades)

There’s really no way to sugarcoat Sunday’s performance in Cincinnati, on either side of the ball. Simply put, Rex Ryan & Co. were outmatched and embarrassed on the road. While the defense put together another solid performance against the run (holding Cincinnati to just 79 total yards and a 3.2 ypc average), it struggled to have the same impact vs. the pass. The front four...

Rex Ryan says Saints a team that can 'flat out embarrass you'

If you thought the New York Jets were humiliated after a blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last week, you don't want to see what happens to Gang Green if they bring the same game Sunday in hosting the New Orleans Saints. Or maybe you do. The Jets did everything wrong against Cincy, falling apart at the seams in the secondary, failing to get a push up front on either side...

Jets remain in playoff picture despite shortcomings

Prior to the start of the regular season, there weren’t too many football fans in New York who would’ve believed you if you said that after eight weeks of play, the Jets would be at 4-4 and in second place, while the Giants would be dead last in the NFC East with a 2-6 record after going winless in their first six games. Heading into Week Nine, that’s exactly the case, and...

Saints-Jets Preview

Under new coordinator Rob Ryan, the New Orleans Saints' vastly improved defense has made things miserable for many opposing offenses. Ryan will try to ensure that misery extends to his twin brother's team as the Saints visit the New York Jets on Sunday. The Saints have been known for a high-powered offense, leading the league in total yardage over the last five seasons...

Dee Milliner is ‘close to being the player’ the New York Jets want

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said rookie cornerback Dee Milliner will start Sunday versus the New Orleans Saints in the swamps of Jersey. After surrendering four catches for 108 yards and a score to Marvin Jones, Ryan again benched the 22-year-old Milliner in last weekend’s 49-9 loss to the Bengals in Cincinnati. Gang Green took the 6-foot, 200 pound Milliner with the ninth...

NFC South: Midseason Awards

As we settle at the season’s halfway point, we can definitively say that the NFC South did not turn out as initially advertised. With Sean Payton returning to the sidelines in New Orleans, we all had a feeling that the Saints would be good once again. But this good? And what about Carolina? The Panthers, who started 1-3, managed to break away from their seasonal woes and ride an...
