Robert Griffin III otherwise known as RG3 may never be the same again. It was reported Tuesday that Dr. Andrews will surgically repair Griffin’s lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, which he tore in Sunday’s wild-card loss against the Seattle Seahawks. The surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. Dr. James Andrews, the most noted surgeon in sports, will determine then if Griffin’s anterior cruciate ligament needs to be repaired as well. He may need 8-12 months to return to the field, and may never have the same burst that he once did. Griffin’s LCL surgery may include ACL repair as well. Dr Andrews will have a look, and it’s possible additional surgeries will be needed. There is likely to be a lot of stiffness in the joints post surgery. This is a very bleak outlook for the RG3 and the Washington Redskins franchise. They finally have a breakthrough season, find a franchise QB and then this happens. But if there’s anyone who can come back from this it’s Griffin- he’ll put in the work and effort to make it happen. And on the optimistic side, look at Adrian Peterson from the Minnesota Vikings. He came back from an ACL injury to have a NFL MVP type season. On the down side though, look at two big ten athletes who were never the same once they suffered Achilles injuries. I know it’s a totally different injury different from the one we’re talking about here, but the possibility of an athlete coming back never the same again- look at QB Dan Persa from Northwestern and point guard Kalin Lucas from Michigan State. They came back to play again, but were just a shell of what they once were. Will Griffin be in the Peterson category or the Persa/Lucas category? Paul M.
