Three days after Tim Brown suggested that former Oakland Raiders coach Bill Callahan sabotaged his team in 2003, preventing them from winning Super Bowl 37, Brown's former teammate, Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, supported Brown's comments. On Tuesday, Rice said on ESPN that he was surprised when Callahan changed the team's offensive gameplan three days before playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the Lombardi Trophy. The Bucs went on to win the game 48-21. "For some reason and I don't know why Bill Callahan did not like me," Rice said. "In a way, maybe because he didn't like the Raiders, he decided, Hey look, maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.'" Rice was then asked if he realized that he was suggesting Callahan might have attempted to throw the Super Bowl. "Yeah, I know exactly what I'm saying," Rice responded. "This is a discussion that Tim and I had. Being veterans, we know that you don't wait until the last second to change the gameplan." Rice said he and Brown never had the opportunity to confront Callahan about potentiality throwing the game. This interview occurred on the same day that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones intimated that Jason Garrett would no longer be calling offensive plays for the Dallas Cowboys, meaning there's a realistic chance that Callahan, the Cowboys offensive line coachoffensive coordinator, would likely take over that responsibility. Despite what Brown, a nine-time Pro Bowler, and Rice, a 13-time Pro Bowl selection who's widely regarded as the greatest receiver of all-time, are saying about Callahan, it's difficult to believe that any coach would not want to win a Super Bowl regardless of how much they may have disliked their players or organization.
