Coach Ron Rivera says he's confident the Carolina Panthers can be a playoff team. The Panthers have won four straight games, including a 34-10 victory Sunday over the Atlanta Falcons. The win leaves the Panthers (5-3) one game behind the division-leading New Orleans Saints in the NFC South. Rivera says Monday, ''I think we can be a playoff team because of the things that we've done and because of the way we're playing.'' It doesn't matter to Rivera that Carolina's five wins have come against teams with a combined 8-33 record. Rivera says ''you play who you're supposed to play.'' The Panthers haven't been to the playoffs since 2008. Carolina travels to San Francisco (6-2) this Sunday and Rivera says ''it will give us a good indication of where we are.'' --- AP NFL website www.pro32.ap.org

'Riverboat' Ron Rivera changes his style to save job: 'you're told to play it by the book, but is that truly the book'

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera is fighting to keep his job and won't go down without a fight. Known as one of the most conservative coaches in the NFL, Rivera is changing his style on the fly and the team is taking notice. Rivera was more conservative than a person stranded on a deserted island rationing food, but since experiencing a 'screw it' moment following a...

TD dance doesn't impress ex-NFLer

Mike Tolbert scored his fourth touchdown of the season Sunday against Atlanta, and then the Carolina Panthers running back celebrated (above) as only a man scoring a touchdown against the Falcons can. But not everyone was so impressed with Tolbert's celebratory dance. For one, Tolbert can probably expect a strongly-worded letter from PETA condemning his use of anti-bird imagery...

Geoff Hangartner to have 3rd stint with Panthers

The Panthers are turning to a familiar figure to help fill their offensive line void after injuries to guards Chris Scott and Jeff Byers during Sunday’s win against Atlanta. Veteran guard/center Geoff Hangartner is scheduled to fly to Charlotte on Tuesday to take a physical with the Panthers, a source close to him said Monday. If Hangartner passes the physical, he’ll sign with...

Delhomme says Newton right guy for Carolina

Jake Delhomme thinks quarterback Cam Newton is the right guy to get the Carolina Panthers back to the Super Bowl. ''He's 24 years old and let's see what happens the rest of the year, but I don't think there's any doubt this guy can certainly do it,'' Delhomme said. The team's career passing leader, Delhomme led the Panthers to their only Super...

GIF: Mike Tolbert breaks out “dirty bird” celebration after TD against Falcons

Tweet   Carolina Panthers running back Mike Tolbert rarely disappoints in the end zone celebration department, and thanks to four touchdowns over the last three weeks heading into Sunday we’ve been able to see him do his thing quite often. Against the Falcons Tolbert didn’t waste much time finding paydirt, scoring on a 4-yard run in the first quarter...

Panthers pick up fourth straight win

Cam Newton overcame a shaky start, throwing for one touchdown and running for another as the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10 Sunday for their fourth straight victory. The Panthers defense picked off Matt Ryan three times and cornerback Drayton Florence returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to help hand the Falcons their fifth loss in six games. Newton...

Panthers end Charles Johnson worthy of attention, even if NFL hasn’t noticed

As he returned to the Panthers’ locker room following a short weightlifting session Thursday afternoon, defensive end Charles Johnson agreed to talk to a reporter. The initial topic? Johnson’s dislike of the spotlight. Before he could answer, a larger group descended to ask Johnson about his strained right groin and his availability for Sunday’s game against the Falcons....

Carolina Panthers: Dominating Second Half Performance Propels Panthers

Driving late in the first half, Cam threw an interception that kept a pesky Atlanta team down only four going into half. Letting a talented quarterback like Matt Ryan hang around is never a good idea, but the defense would keep him from putting up a point in the second half. Regardless, Carolina only led by a touchdown entering the fourth before Cam ran one in from eight yards and...

Mike Tolbert does Dirty Bird after scoring touchdown (GIF)

I guess it’s still fashionable to mock the Dirty Bird even though that hasn’t been a big celebration for the Atlanta Falcons for a while. After scoring a touchdown in the first quarter on Sunday to put the Carolina Panthers up 7-0 on the Falcons, running back Mike Tolbert celebrated with the Dirty Bird dance […]
