The last time the Dallas Cowboys met the Philadelphia Eagles they were obliterated 34-7. It remains the most lopsided loss the Cowboys have experienced all season. The Eagles completely exposed the Cowboys defense, though Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan took 100% of the blame for the loss. After the embarrassing blowout Ryan answered questions from reporters in the visiting locker room of Lincoln Financial Field. He seemed equal parts angry and dismissive. He was angry with himself and dismissive of his player’s impact on the results—completely shouldering the blame for the loss and explaining how his game plan “never gave our guys a chance.” Ryan had constructed that game plan to focus on Philadelphia’s deep threat, which can be particularly devastating. He had kept both of his safeties, Gerald Sensabaugh and Abram Elam, dropped back to protect against QB Michael Vick connecting with either WR DeSean Jackson or WR Jeremy Maclin for big yards. General philosophies regarding defending Vick have always focused on trying to preempt Vick’s explosiveness; the idea being that if Vick connects for major yardage then he’ll have better opportunities to take advantage of medium-yardage situations (which is the best part of his game).
