New York Daily News columnist Gary Myers is releasing a book on Tuesday called Coaching Confidential: Inside the Fraternity of NFL Coaches, which includes many interesting nuggets about former and current NFL head coaches. One of the most interesting things Myers wrote about was how New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft dealt with head coach Bill Belichick when the NFL punished them for Spy Gate. “Everybody has their idiosyncrasies, but if there is trust, that’s the key in business, in marriages,” Kraft told Myers during a 2010 dinner, per Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe. “You build a sense of trust so you go through rough times. Look what happened with this bogus thing with the Jets. I stood by him pretty darn good. That was rough.” Kraft was referring to Spy Gate when referring to the “bogus thing.” “How much do you think that helped us?” Kraft asked. “How much of a surprise was it to [Jets coach Eric] Mangini and [general manager Mike] Tannenbaum? “You know how many teams steal signals? That’s bupkis . . . We kicked [the Jets] off our roof [in 2006].” At the time the Jets insisted the Patriots gave them permission to tape for that location. Kraft also told Myers what happened when he talked to Belichick about the Spy Gate incident. “How much did this help us on a scale of 1 to 100?” Kraft asked Belichick. “One,” Belichick replied. “Then you’re a real schmuck,” Kraft said he told Belichick. Kraft doesn’t believe that Kraft knowingly did anything wrong. “He would take every edge he could get but he would never knowingly break the rules or cross the line,” Kraft said. “I know him. I’m not saying he was a choir boy.” I’m not sure that I believe Belichick didn’t know he was doing anything wrong when it came to Spy Gate, I’m sure he played dumb and was just happy to keep his job.   var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })(); sr_adspace_id = 1000005525107; sr_adspace_width = 300; sr_adspace_height = 250; sr_ad_new_window = true; sr_adspace_type = "graphic";
