With the BountyGate scandal behind him and possible rule changes slated for the offseason, Roger Goodell is back on a familiar kick: Expansion. As in, expanding the postseason.

The concept has been brought up in the past, and the commissioner, speaking at Wednesday's special league meeting in Dallas, hinted the playoff field may indeed be broadened.

"We'll look at probably 14 or 16 teams," Goodell said, via USA Today.

Goodell added that discussions with the competition committee will continue in the months ahead. The assumption is that a 16-team playoff expansion would make for a compelling late season race, but money, as always, is likely among the chief concerns. More games would mean more revenue in the league's pockets from its extremely lucrative television contracts.

It still doesn't make it a worthy idea, though. Just the opposite, in fact.

Having 16 teams in the tournament make bye weeks obsolete, taking away the incentive for the truly elite teams that earn the right to rest and time off. Also, it'd obviously mean that half of the league makes it into the postseason, even sub-.500 clubs which, for all intents and purposes, don't deserve to get in.

As is, it's a huge deal to make it into January, alive and fighting for the Lombardi Trophy. That accomplish could soon be irrelevant.

Between raising possibilities of an 18-game regular season, basing a franchise in London, and, more recently, the banishment of kickoffs, Goodell has developed an unflattering reputation as a man who often tries to fix what isn't broken.

Unfortunately for the NFL's players and fans, his stripes don't appear to be changing.
