Rookie Steelers LB Spence finding his way

Associated Press  |  Last updated May 24, 2012
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By WILL GRAVES AP Sports Writer Steelers rookie linebacker Sean Spence chose No. 31 when he played at Miami because he wanted to create his own path. The Steelers didn't give him the same option. The third-round draft pick found No. 51 hanging in his locker when he arrived for rookie minicamp a few weeks ago, the same number that belonged to former Pittsburgh star James Farrior for a decade. Even though he's being groomed to one day take over Farrior's spot at inside linebacker, Spence says there's no reason to draw comparisons. Spence is three inches shorter and 15 pounds lighter than Farrior and admits he's almost overwhelmed by defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's complex 3-4 defense. Spence will play behind Larry Foote this season but is expected to make an impact on special teams.
