HOUSTON (AP) -- Rookie T.J. Yates threw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start, Arian Foster rushed for 111 yards and Houston overcame another hamstring injury to Andre Johnson to beat Atlanta 17-10 on Sunday. The Texans (9-3) have won a franchise-record six straight games, a remarkable feat considering they're down to their third-string quarterback and have played the bulk of their streak without their star receiver. Johnson left in the third quarter after hurting his left hamstring. He injured his right hamstring in Week 4 and sat out six games. The Falcons (7-5) sputtered offensively much of the day and lost for the second time in seven games. Houston's top-ranked defense knocked down two Matt Ryan passes in the end zone in the closing seconds.

I WANT TO! But no, let’s not. Except that we can all say with confidence now that Yates>Leinart. Small sample size for both, but based on that sample – yeah, it’s done. There are three things that give me a really good feeling about TJ Yates going forward, based on how he did against a solid Atlanta defense (excellent against the run, though not so great against the pass...

Jeff Garcia signs on with Houston

The Texans are desperate for a backup to T.J. Yates, and now have Jeff Garcia on the roster to go with Jake Delhomme, who signed with the team last week.

Falcons slip to Texans

Ryan is taken down The Falcons struggled on the road against the Houston Texans, finishing with a disappointing 17-10 loss. The Falcons had some opportunities to win late, twice with the ball in Texans territory late in the fourth quarter, but failed to punch it in. They also found themselves with two defensive touchdowns wiped off the board from turnovers due to costly penalties...

Delhomme to backup Yates

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak says Jake Delhomme will back up rookie T.J. Yates in Sunday's game against Atlanta. The Texans (8-3) signed the 36-year-old Delhomme on Tuesday, after Matt Leinart broke his left collarbone in Sunday's 20-13 win at Jacksonville. Leinart had his scheduled surgery moved from Thursday to next Tuesday because he has an illness...

Hobbled Texans still on top of AFC

Even with a third-string QB, the Texans keep on winning. T.J. Yates led Houston to a 17-10 win over the Falcons, and Chris Burke says that no team is playing with more toughness.

Falcons squander another chance to take control

After squandering another chance to take control of their playoff fate, the Atlanta Falcons are beginning to realize this is the way it's going to be. In all likelihood, the postseason race will come down to the final week. The Falcons (7-5) are right in the thick of the wild-card race, tied with Detroit and Chicago, but their hopes of repeating as NFC South champions are beginning...

Texans Waive Kellen Clemens

A week after signing veteran Jake Delhomme, and two days after fifth-round pick T.J. Yates won his first NFL start, the Texans have waived quarterback Kellen Clemens, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. Clemens was signed to a one-year contract after the team lost quarterback Matt Schaub to a season-ending foot injury. The former second-round pick out of Oregon was inactive...

Depleted Texans continue winning; Packers stay perfect with late drive

HOUSTON — Apparently, it's going to take more than injuries to star players to derail the Houston Texans. Rookie T.J. Yates threw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start, Arian Foster rushed for 111 yards and Houston overcame another injury to Andre Johnson to beat Atlanta 17-10 on Sunday. ...

Texans take big step toward playoffs, Falcons miss a big chance

The Houston Texans look like they can win the AFC South no matter who’s at quarterback. And the Atlanta Falcons look like they’re just about out of the NFC South race. Down to third-string quarterback T.J. Yates, Houston had a heavy dose of Arian Foster and a great defensive effort and managed to pull off…

Delhomme will be No. 2 for the Texans on Sunday

The Texans have emphasized that quarterback Jake Delhomme wasn’t brought to town to take the job of starter T.J. Yates.  But Delhomme already has taken the job of Yates’ backup for last week, Kellen Clemens. Delhomme will be the No. 2 behind Yates when the Texans host the Falcons on Sunday. “Jake’s done it before,”…
