Players make bold statements about their availability all the time, but if you spent a first round pick on Ryan Matthews, you’re looking for any positive news to come out of the Chargers camp. The Chargers explosive runner failed to graduate from Fresno State with a doctorate, but did declare that there was “no doubt” that he would play against the Raiders in the finale of week 1 per XTRA Sports 1560. San Diego’s season opener will take place on September 10th, 32 days since Matthews’ clavicle was broken by the Packers in the first week of the preseason. That would be on the early end of his projected 4-6 recovery period, but it is far from certain that he will be active. The Chargers got rid of Mike Tolbert this off season, meaning there is no longer a dependable backup, thus increasing the odds of San Diego takes it slow with their injury prone RB.
