You need only look at what happened during the second half of the 2013 season in Green Bay to realize how important a backup quarterback is to an organization. Drew Brees is a MVP-caliber signal caller, but as of right now the only backup plan for a Brees injury is a rookie out of Tulane by the name of Ryan Griffin. Although Griffin has the profile of a NFL quarterback, it’s too early to tell if he could take the reigns next year should the unthinkable happen. As we head into free agency New Orleans has a serious eye towards the quarterback market, specifically for a veteran who can provide a viable second option in addition to training Griffin. Chad Henne is one name to keep an eye out for. Henne enjoyed a bit of success in Jacksonville, and although his measurable skills don’t jump off the charts he could excel in the Saints’ system. Sean Payton is a quarterback friendly coach and would tailor his play-calling to Henne’s strength, and from a financial perspective Henne certainly wouldn’t break the bank. Breaking the bank is an important concept, because New Orleans won’t be looking to spend an arm and a leg on a backup option. The key is maximizing potential for minimal financial commitment, and there may not be a better way to do that than to take a chance on Vince Young. Young spent some time in the Packers’ camp last year before being released (and replaced by Seneca Wallace), leaving a lot of fans and analysts alike scratching their heads. He looked great in the preseason, and all accounts pointed to Young getting his life back on track. It’s now a year later and we have no idea what he did during that time off; however, if he managed to maintain his focus he may have the most upside of all the free agent quarterbacks (especially considering he’ll be signed to an incentive-laden contract anywhere he lands). If Henne and Young don’t work out, there are still a few other options out there. To find out more about them click here.
