Found March 22, 2013 on The Saints Nation:
This is the third offseason in a row I am clamoring for a difference maker on defense. In 2011, I wrote this. Unsatisfied with how that year went, I essentially wrote the exact same piece in 2012. Here we are again, for the third straight year, and I'm singing a familiar refrain we're all starting to know a little too well. The Saints haven't had a 2009 version of Darren Sharper since, well, Darren Sharper in 2009. And once again we're waiting for that to happen. Don't get me wrong, I like the Keenan Lewis signing. The guy is a good player and I think he represents an upgrade. But I view him as a solid player, not a playmaker. I view him as a guy that will be rock solid in coverage, hopefully, but I don't think he's the ballhawk "difference maker" that turns in a 6+ interception season. Could that guy be Nnamdi Asomugha, Victor Butler or the 15th overall pick? I have no idea. Could a guy like Martez Wilson or Junior Galette finally explode onto the scene this year? Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. I do know this defense isn't going to get much better without a player that's so good he makes everyone around him better. One thing is for sure, the guys currently on the team aren't manifesting themselves as that guy. At least not on a consistent level. Maybe re-signing Will Herring has a place on this team for depth purposes. I didn't love it, but I'm sure the Saints are just doing due diligence in creating competition for camp. That sure isn't what I have in mind with this post, though. And honestly, I want to see Asomugha, Butler and the #15th pick as a defensive player on this team. The more gambles you take on quality players, the better the chance you hit yahtzee with one of them. That's what the Saints need at this point. One guy could change everything. And much like I've said before, I could care less what position he plays, I just want him to make a difference. Will a playmaker please stand up?

Saints remain high on Nnamdi Asomugha

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints remain high at free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha after meeting with him. It looks like Asomugha will have to decide on whether he wants to sign with the Saints or the 49ers.  All New Orleans can do right now is wait.   Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement...

Saints Nation: Nnamdi Asomugha and Victor Butler Together Would Represent Massive Upgrade to ...

The Saints' defense was miserable beyond words last year, this is not news to anyone. Some say it was the worst ever, and from a yardage yielding perspective that much cannot be argued. It was certainly the worst in Saints' history and that is really and unbelievable feat when you think about it. So far the only addition the Saints have made is cornerback Keenan Lewis. I...

Saints Rumors: Victor Butler to visit

It seems a lot of defensive players are visiting New Orleans, although Mardi Gras finished over a month ago. Another one to visit is Victor Butler, the free agent linebacker according to the Times-Picayune: The Saints are looking for outside linebackers as they convert to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Butler, who is 6 feet 2 and 245 pounds, played under Ryan...

The Loss Of Keenan Lewis Won’t Be Felt Until After 2013

We all thought that the Pittsburgh Steelers top priority this offseason would have to be re-signing unrestricted free agent CB Keenan Lewis. Obviously that wasn’t the case as Lewis signed a five year contract with the New Orleans Saints and Lewis said his farewell to Steelers’ fans on twitter via Dave Bryan of Steelersdepot.com. According to Lewis, the Steelers never offered...

Saints Nation: Mock Saints Draft

This week I will be breaking down the Saints needs (in my opinion) and where they stand as far as the draft goes. The Saints have lost a few people to free agency, but those people are not irreplaceable. The worst one was definitely the Kromer/Bushrod to the Bears combination. A solid left tackle going to another team, along with a good offensive line coach. I think the Saints...

Steelers, Saints may be interested in Jarvis Jones

Former Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones participated in today’s pro at the University of Georgia, and didn’t perform as well as some people had thought he would.  But Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network believes both the Steelers and Saints are currently eyeing Jones. Teams already buzzin about UGA’s Jenkins, especially after looking nice in position drills. Bet on Steelers &...
