The New Orleans Saints have saved $4.78 million in salary cap space by restructuring the contract of veteran defensive end Will Smith, according to numbers obtained by ESPN.com. The deal was finalized Monday as the Saints position themselves to be under the salary cap at the start of free agency. That could be a challenge because the Saints have placed a franchise tag of almost $15 million on quarterback Drew Brees and want to attempt to re-sign guard Carl Nicks and receiver Marques Colston, as well as some other free agents. The Saints likely will be releasing some veterans in the coming days, but restructuring Smith gives them some added flexibility. The deal was signed Monday and it dropped Smith’s 2012 base salary from $7 million down to the veteran minimum of $825,000.

New Orleans' "bounty hunting" engrained in NFL DNA

Spare me the outrage, the moral posturing and the sanctimonious grandstanding by anyone who claims to be offended that pro football is a tough, violent, nasty game. Football has risen to its status as Americas favorite sport because of the games inherent physical nature. Watch any game at any sports bar, and you hear whoop after whoop after whoop when a helmet-launching hit is...

This afternoon Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis issued a joint statement regarding the “Bounty gate” scandal that has been sweeping the NFL headlines since the developments were brought to light last Friday. “We acknowledge that the violations disclosed by the NFL during their investigation of our club happened under our watch. We take full responsibility...

How Screwed Are The Saints?

The month of March has not been kind to the Who Datters. It began with the reports that general manager Mikey Loomis was soft-pedaling the talents of his elite franchise quarterback and then proceeded to get exponentially worse with the fulmination of GregggggggGggggate. If only matters smoothed over, we’d assume that the team might be able to outlast this catastrophe, but, alas...

Saints' Bounty Program Warrants Harsh Punishment, But Comparison to Spygate Is Apples to Oranges

Spygate has been thrust back into the limelight following the recent revelations regarding the New Orleans Saints' bounty program. But why? Aside from both instances breaking NFL rules, is there really a comparison to be made between the two? The Patriots' Spygate situation involved videotaping defensive coaches' signals, whereas the Saints' bounty program -- spearheaded...

Goodell to NFL clubs: Eliminate bounties

Commissioner Roger Goodell has ordered the owners of all 32 NFL teams to make sure their clubs are not offering bounties like the New Orleans Saints did from 2009-11. Goodell's memo instructs each team's principal owner and head coach to certify in writing by March 30 that no pay-for-performance system exists. Goodell says Wednesday that bounty programs ''are incompatible...

In the midst of the Gregg Williams “Bounty-Gate” scandal, the NFL Network has decided not to re-air the 2009 NFC Championship Game between the Minnesota Vikings at the New Orleans Saints. Anything But Saints

The NFL’s New Orleans Saints have not lived up to their name and are facing sanctions from the League.  It was revealed this weekend that the Saints ain’t so righteous, because the team has been running a bounty system with 25+ defensive players over the last several years.  The program was implemented by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and subsequently...

NFLPA To Review Saints 'Bounty' Program Case

The NFL Players Association, just like the NFL, is deeply troubled by the reports of the New Orleans Saints' bounty policy under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and is launching its own comprehensive review of the situation. The NFLPA released a statement Wednesday to announce its intent to examine how the team violated the terms of league's collective bargaining...

Trouble In New Orleans by G.W. Gras

The world of sports is a funny thing.  One minute - an athlete, coach or franchise can be on top of the world and the next minute, fall flat on their face.  In 2009 the New Orleans Saints stood atop the football universe as Super Bowl Champs.  Every player and coach on that team became hero's to a city that was literally left in ruin due to the devastation left in 2005 by...

The true scandal of BountyGate is hidden in the hyperbole

I didn't want to write anything about the BountyGate coverage knowing I could never give an unbiased, fair assessment of the scandal as a lifelong Saints fan.  I've always been curious what it'd be like to have my team at the center of a scandal big enough it got its own "Gate" attached to it... now I know, it sucks.  This is worse than going through the...

What The Hell Is Going On

There are a lot of sports in the world, ranging from those that require top-shelf physical skill (marathon running, pro football against the New Orleans Saints) to sports you can sorta perform involuntarily (curling, the luge). Apparently the “wide wide world of sports” isn’t wide enough for some people, as natives of the Malay-Thai Peninsula have combined soccer, tennis...
