If the New Orleans Saints miss out of free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com wouldn’t be surprised to see the team target defensive end/outside linebacker Dwight Freeney. Don't be surprised when #Saints emerge as a player for Dwight Freeney, especially if they miss on Nnamdi. Still trying to upgrade pass-rush — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 25, 2013 Rapoport points out that the Saints continue to attempt to upgrade their pass rush, and Freeney is one of the few free agents remaining that could help in that area. There is likely to be a run on pass rushers following the signing of Elvis Dumervil. Other than Freeney, defensive ends John Abraham and Osi Umenyiora are also available. Freeney struggled in the Indianapolis Colts 3-4 scheme last season, and the Saints are planning to use a similar system in 2013. However, if Freeney is asked to be more of a pass rush specialist and not an every down linebacker, he could prove more effective. Beyond the Saints, Freeney has also been linked to the Denver Broncos this offseason. Saints Nation: How Much Did the Saints Really Miss Sean Payton?

The Saints' defense last year was atrocious, this much we know. It's largely to blame for the team missing the playoffs last year. But the offense felt off too. Just how much is the question, really. If the defense had been passable, was this offense good enough to be a playoff team? How did it compare to the previous year's offenses? For the sake of this exercise, I...

Report: Dolphins have some interest in Dwight Freeney

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter via Evan Silva, the Miami Dolphins have some interest in free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney. Schefter didn’t elaborate, but the Fins could provide competition for the Broncos, who want Freeney to help replace Elvis Dumervil. Freeney is 33 years old and coming off a five-sack season. Because Von Miller and Cameron Wake generally play the...

Saints entering the Dwight Freeney sweepstakes?

We just reported that the Broncos and Dwight Freeney haven’t ramped up their contract talks yet. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints also make an attempt to sign Freeney to upgrade their pass rush. It looks like both teams are looking to add Freeney for purely pass rushing reasons.  He’s not a good fit in a 3-4, but can wreak havoc on third...

Broncos Prefer Dwight Freeney Over John Abraham

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos would prefer to sign Dwight Freeney over John Abraham now that they’ve lost Elvis Dumervil to the Ravens. Klis adds that they would only pursue a deal with Abraham if they ”can’t reach agreement with Freeney.” Peyton Manning was believed to be trying to lure Freeney to Denver over a month ago and both players visited...

Welp, you can probably cross Dwight Freeney off your list

With the Saints jumping in on the Freeney sweepstakes this week, things got a lot more complicated. So that leaves the Broncos, Patriots, Saints and Steelers as all apparent suitors for the services of Dwight Freeney. With so much interest, and with Dumervil inking a nice deal with the Ravens, it seems Freeney has a little bit of leverage and thus some salary demands. Colleague...

Report: Saints “pushing hard” to sign Nnamdi Asomugha

We reported over the weekend that free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is still trying to decided whether he’s going to sign with the Saints or 49ers. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Saints are “pushing hard” to sign Asomugha. The Saints secondary got torched by opposing offenses last year and clearly believe Asomugha can help them out despite his poor play...
