Jonathan Vilma is happy he finally realized he could serve the Saints better by taking a little extra time off.
Vilma tried to play through the pain of a left knee injury for most of the first half of the season and wanted to continue doing so, but says he was eventually persuaded to take a ''big-picture'' approach. He had minor arthroscopic surgery that kept him out for three straight games, but which allowed him to come back healthy for the stretch run to the playoffs.
Vilma returned to action last Sunday night and had a team leading 10 tackles in a 31-17 victory over Detroit.
The Saints play at Tennessee this Sunday and say they're happy to have their defensive captain back and matching wits with opposing quarterbacks.

Saints RB Ingram ruled out for Sunday
New Orleans Saints rookie running back Mark Ingram has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
Ingram has been hampered by a case of turf toe. He had sat out two games earlier this season due to a heel injury, but has rushed for a touchdown in each of the last two games for the NFC South-leading Saints.
In 10 games this season, Ingram has rushed for 474...
Enemy Intelligence: New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints are coming off a 31-17 home win against the Detroit Lions. They jumped out to an early 24-7 lead before the Lions cut the deficit to 24-17 early in the fourth quarter before a Drew Brees to Darren Sproles touchdown pass extended the lead to fourteen points. As I've seen some or all of something like nine games the Saints have played this year, my observations...
Ingram Ruled Out For Saints
Running back Mark Ingram has been ruled out for Week 14 at Tennessee due to turf toe, according to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Fantasy Spin:
Ingram has been playing well as of late, but the injury bug is once again spoiling his rookie campaign. Pierre Thomas should handle more carries in Ingrams absence, hence elevating his fantasy stock a bit.
Fantasy Football Preview Week 14: Saints vs. Titans
New Orleans @ Tennessee
The Saints won at home (big surprise) against the Lions, while the Titans won a tough one on the road against the Bills.
Drew Brees is absolutely on fire. In a season dominated by elite quarterbacks, Brees is right with Rodgers and Brady on the bad-ass scale. Lance Moore seems to be the flavor of the week among Saint receivers, as he has scored three times...
Saints Nation: Scouting the Titans
The Saints just arrived into Nashville this early afternoon in preparation to face off against a 7-5 Titans team that for the most part has beaten the teams they were expected to beat and have caved against superior competition. I'd like to believe the Saints represent the latter, so a win should be firmly expected, but the Saints will have to go into hostile territory facing...

Titans +3.5 vs. Saints: The Sean Payton offense is a pinball machine at home, undefeated and untouchable, but these guys don't always travel well. The Saints somehow lost on the road to St. Louis and Tampa Bay, and Drew Brees has been ordinary away from the dome (his QB rating drops...
