The 2011 New Orleans Saints’ schedule primes them to make the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

This is how the NFL makes their schedules, In New Orleans’ case.

Each season, The New Orleans Saints play their division foes (Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Carolina) twice, once at home and once away. That totals to six games.

Each division will play all four teams in a specific division within the same conference and all four teams in a specific division in the other conference. The divisions are determined by a four year rotation. This schedule rotation accounts for eight games.

In 2011, the Saints and the rest of the NFC South will play against the NFC North and the AFC South divisions.
The remaining two games are determined by the team’s place within the team’s respective division.

The New Orleans Saints finished second in the NFC South with an 11-5 record, behind the 13-3 Atlanta Falcons. So, in New Orleans’ case, they will play the teams that came in second place in their respective divisions.

The St. Louis Rams placed second in the NFC West with a 7-9 record and the New York Giants placed second in the NFC East with a 10-6 record.

With this layout, Atlanta will play the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) and the NFC West “champion” Seattle Seahawks (7-9).
