Saints veteran tight end David Thomas struggled in the past year with activities as natural as playing outside with his young boys. A pair of concussions during the 2011 NFL season left him so sensitive to light that even sunglasses weren't much help. And when his infant daughter cried, his wife, Kassidy, would whisk her away so the noise would not worsen her husband's symptoms. If Thomas had to make a choice between family and football, it would be the former. For now, however, he is back to training and practicing vigorously, drawing praise from coaches and teammates - thanks to a compromise that allowed him to pursue a comeback with some piece of mind. Thomas asked his wife to take part in every doctor's visit, to join him on trips from coast to coast as he sought out a half-dozen top neurological specialists for opinions on whether it was safe to get back on the field. ''It was important for me to, every time I spoke with the doctor, have her listen in and ask questions of her own, because the last thing I wanted was to come back and her not be comfortable and her be worried about me,'' Thomas said. ''It was important for her to be involved with the whole process because it doesn't just affect me. It affects her and it affects our kids. We just had to really listen to each other and listen to the doctors and just work together and trust each other.'' Kassidy Thomas first met her husband in eighth grade in Lubbock, Texas, and they started dating when they were juniors in high school. By now, she knows the seventh-year NFL pro out of Texas well enough to notice changes in him, be it an increased frequency of headaches or unusual mood swings - both symptoms of concussions. She notices things that her husband does not notice about himself, and she said that neurologists routinely questioned her even more than her husband about his symptoms. ''I feel like they received even more information by us going in together. There were things he hadn't noticed, such as irritability,'' Kassidy Thomas said. ''It meant a lot to me that he was including me. It meant a lot that he was putting our family first, that he was willing to walk away if that was best.'' Thomas' first concussion of 2011 occurred when the Saints hosted Houston in late September. While being spun around, he took a heavy helmet-to-helmet hit. Doctors ruled him unfit to return to the game, and he wound up sidelined for six weeks. His next concussion came in his second game back at Atlanta. Kassidy Thomas stayed home with the kids, watching on TV, and when she stepped away to put the kids in bed for a nap, she heard the cellphone ring tone she had assigned to calls received from her husband, and knew immediately that something was wrong. The second concussion was minor compared to the first, but the Saints decided to put Thomas on injured reserve for the remainder of the season, leaving Thomas and his wife to wonder if he had made a mistake coming back last season, or if he would ever play again. ''It was hard to think about not'' playing again, Thomas said. ''But I found comfort in my family and my faith, knowing that whatever happened, if I was done, that I had a family to come home to who loved me and great opportunities after football.'' Kassidy Thomas did not want to husband exposed to undue risks, but knew he loved football and wanted to take a rational and fair-minded approach. ''I did not want him to stop living his life as long as he was medically cleared,'' she said. ''I've had so many women say, `How are you not bothering him? How are you not falling apart?' But I knew how seriously he was taking it. Being included in all of those conversations (with doctors) and getting to voice how I felt, when he decided to go back on the field I was confident for him. I trusted that he had done things the right way. I trusted we had sought out the best information and he was making an informed decision.'' The Saints are thrilled to have Thomas back. Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham said Thomas is not only the unquestioned veteran leader of the tight ends, but one of the people most looked up to on the whole team. ''Having him back is awesome,'' Graham said. ''His leadership is definitely needed right now.'' Thomas arrived in New Orleans in 2009, helping the Saints win their only Super Bowl with his versatility, sound blocking and knack for making clutch catches. He has filled in at fullback when needed, and coaches say he knows the assignments of numerous positions on the offense. ''I'm not so sure that he is not on the verge of brilliant when it comes to being a football player,'' assistant head coach Joe Vitt said. Vitt added that if younger players on the Saints aren't paying close attention to Thomas, ''then they are stupid. They shouldn't be here. He is the epitome of a professional.'' He is also, according to Kassidy Thomas, the epitome of a good father and husband. ''I feel like he's taken every precaution necessary,'' Kassidy Thomas said. ''I have full faith he's going to go out there and be fine and have a great season, and I'm really excited for him and really looking forward to it.''

New Orleans Saints really need QB Drew Brees now

The New Orleans Saints and QB Drew Brees have been locked in contract talks this offseason, but the team needs him more than ever after Wednesday. New Orleans had been conducting team OTAs and mini-camps without the services of Drew Brees with QB Chase Daniel taking the majority of the snaps with the first team. Daniel fractured his thumb on Monday and will not be able to throw the...

Saints Nation: Curtis Lofton Could Transform Saints' Defense

Tackling, lack of pressure, poor run defense, spotty coverage... all things the Saints struggled with a year ago. There's pretty much no facet of the defense that I would have considered "strong" with regards to the 2011 Saints. They did do a good job of getting off the field on third down, and they did well to close out some games with big plays (at Tennessee and at...

Latest Saints offseason setback: backup QB Daniel injured

Now starting at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints ... Sean Canfield? It was only minicamp, but that was the reality for the Saints Wednesday. With Drew Brees away until his contract situation is resolved and backup Chase Daniel watching with his right hand bandaged because of a hairline fracture of his throwing-hand thumb, the Saints' offense looked nothing like the precision...

Saints Nation: Greg Romeus' Career Over Before it Ever Started?

When the Saints drafted Greg Romeus in the 7th round a year ago, he was damaged goods. They took a flyer on him anyway, because when healthy he was that good. After suffering a "redshirt" rookie season that saw him spend it on IR, I was excited about what the 2012 version of Greg Romeus could do to help the team. It's kind of embarrassing that I wrote that blog exactly...

Saints’ Nick Toon has a good chance to win #4 receiver job

The New Orleans Times-Picayune says that 4th round rookie Nick Toon has a good chance to win the #4 receiver job, a competition that the New Orleans Times-Picayune predicted would be a heated one earlier in the week. Toon reportedly impressed in minicamp, catching “nearly everything” thrown his way and “seems to be better than a 4th round pick” which is a sentiment I agreed...

Report: Brees turned down offer that would make him highest paid QB

Getty Images According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints have offered quarterback Drew Brees a contract that would pay him more than both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.  All indications are that it’s still not enough money. “‪Saints‬ have offered to make him a higher-paid QB than Brady & Manning,” said Schefter, per Evan Silva.  ”It has not been...

Report: Saints, Drew Brees negotiations will go down to the July 16th wire

Getty Images According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the contract talks between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees will likely go down to the July 16th wire.  If a deal doesn’t get done by then, Brees will have to play out the 2012 season under the franchise tag. I strongly believe that if a deal isn’t finalized before the July 16th deadline, Brees will...

Talks between Saints, Drew Brees could go down to the wire

According to Pro Football Talk, extension discussions between the Saints and Drew Brees could go down to the wire, with the wire being the July 16th deadline for franchise players to sign long term deals. If Brees does not sign his tender by that date, he’ll have to play out this season under the 1 year franchise tag and or not play at all, though I can’t see Brees choosing the...

Saints QB Chase Daniel Breaks Thumb During Practice

The New Orleans Saints' quarterback depth chart already was unsightly without Drew Brees. Now things are just getting ugly. Saints interim coach Joe Vitt announced Wednesday that Chase Daniel has a hairline fracture and sprain of the thumb on his right throwing hand. Vitt said Daniel won't throw for two and a half weeks. The quarterback was injured in practice earlier this...

Saints Nation: Is Drew Brees Being Greedy?

It's been the elephant in the room for quite some time now and no one locally seems prepared to broach it, so I'm now going to come out and ask it - have we gotten to the point in the ongoing Drew Brees negotiations saga where it might seem like he's the one holding this up?What we think we know: The Saints offered Brees a 5 year, $95 million deal at some point...

Saints DE Greg Romeus Tears ACL And MCL In His Knee

New Orleans Saints defensive end Greg Romeus tore the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament in his left knee earlier this week, according to coach Joe Vitt. He had previously torn the ACL in his right knee in college. Vitt said Romeus will be sidelined for six to eight months, which means he will almost certainly be placed on injured reserve for the 2012 season...

Police Say Saints Wiretapping Case Still Under Investigation

Louisiana State Police reiterated Wednesday that the wiretapping case against New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is still open, and investigators are determining if there's enough evidence to bring charges, state police Cmd. Doug Cain told NFL.com. The FBI and Louisiana police are investigating if Loomis violated wiretapping laws after allegations that a rigged...

Longtime sports columnist Peter Finney let go in massive New Orleans Times-Picayune layoffs

One of the biggest stories in the wider media is the current demolition job happening to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.  This fall, the newspaper that has served New Orleans since 1837 will be cut from being published daily to just three days a week - Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday to focus more on online journalism.  While the move is not unprecedented, it was met with disappointment...
