General manager John Schneider has the right mindset, unlike the San Francisco 49ers who are trying to milk a situation that could backfire on them. Having a quarterback in the fold like backup Matt Flynn, who really still is an unknown entity, allows them to have a capable back up who hasn’t started for them. The 49ers have a veteran who they won’t release, and if they want super value for a quarterback they benched, then their salary cap will take a hit. Flynn will be a hot topic once the new league year starts; he’ll come cheaper and without experience, and still will have to prove himself. That makes it easy to trade him and let the other team renegotiate his contract. Smith is a proven starter, thus making his demand to be paid like a starter a legitimate one. However, Schneider won’t rush, but he will keep his ears open for whatever offer floats his way. “I think we have a great setup,” Schneider said, via Darin Gantt of profootballtalk.com. I feel very blessed that we have two quarterbacks, two starting-caliber guys. What happened last year didn’t really have a reflection on what Matt did, or Tarvaris [Jackson] for that matter. It was really what Russell did in terms of just kind of stepping forward and taking charge." “It’s so early. Everybody is in the middle of the draft process. So it’s not like I’ve had a chance to sit down with other general managers and some of the people I know around the league to talk about what their situation is. As you guys well know, we’re always going to listen to everything and if we’re not doing that, we think we’re not doing our job. That doesn’t necessarily mean we will do something with Matt.”   var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
