Golden Tate is an interesting character. At only 5’10 and 202 lbs he doesn’t scream outside receiver. When he gets onto the field however, he plays much bigger than he really is. Whether it be a perfectly timed jump or running after the catch, Tate seems to be a valuable part of the Seahawk’s offense. But how will he fit in when Seattle brought in a better version of Tate in Percy Harvin? First off, Tate and Harvin do not play the same position. Harvin is more of a slot receiver who will play outside once in awhile to get him open space. Tate usually plays outside, he will catch the quick bubble screen, run a quick slant, or try to burn the corner deep. While Harvin lead the league in broken tackles at the wide receiver position, Tate was 5th. With only 48 touches on the season that is incredible. Tate broke tackles on 29.2% of all his touches, the highest of any receiver or tight end in the league. He has a knack for catching the ball and turning it into a great play, while Harvin is more of a speed guy who is stronger than you thought, Tate possesses a gifted ability to make people miss. It was clear in the second half of the season Tate and Wilson developed a chemistry within the offense. He had 25 catches in the second half of the season with 433 yards, almost double the amount of yards he had in games 1-8 (yes that includes the packers game). Tate will be the forgotten man. In an offense where you have to stop Wilson, Lynch, Harvin, Miller, and Rice, Tate will be able to take advantage of one on ones and win every time. I expect to see big plays from Tate this season. Not to mention he is in a contract year. Although Seattle is saving room to re-sign Sherman and Thomas, Seattle might have a few bucks laying around to get Tate signed to an extension. If he is what we believe him to be, it will be worth every penny.
