The Buffalo Bills found themselves leading this week against the NFL’s only remaining unbeaten team, despite having their backup’s backup playing QB. Sunday’s game was only the second time this season that the KC Chiefs went into half time trailing. As nice as that all sounds, the Bills found a way to lose the game… again. While I understand this team is “heading in the right direction” as we all tend to say on a weekly basis, moral victories count for nothing in professional sports. As I’m certain you all are, I’m sick of losing games we should be winning. As frustrated as I am with losing, something else has been eating at me this week. People are allowing their frustration with tough losses and poor officiating to turn them into conspiracy theorists. Statements like, “Well the NFL clearly just wanted to preserve the Chiefs/Broncos match-up” make us look pathetic. Do you REALLY believe the NFL picks the teams it wants to win and lose??? I’m not saying that the officials have been good. I was peeved with the Goodwin incomplete call myself, but sports are far from perfect. Doesn’t mean some higher power decided that that wasn’t a catch just because it benefited Kansas City. If you want to get into talks of superstition and curses I’m game. That stuff to me is interesting even if it is BS, but there is a difference between being a snake-bitten franchise and having the NFL determine your opponent is going to walk away with the W. If there was a conspiracy going on in the NFL wouldn’t you think they’d tip the scales in favor of a large market team like the Jets instead of a secondary market like Kansas City? If your claim is that the NFL is conspiring against the Bills, to make sure they’re not good, that’s just as stupid. Jeff Tuel having to start at QB for an injured Thad Lewis who was starting for an injured EJ Manuel who was starting for an injured Kevin Kolb, having a majority of the secondary banged up and losing both your starting RB’s throughout the season has contributed to the 3-6 record quite enough without any additional help from the NFL’s League of Shadows. The team doesn’t know how to win close games yet. With so many young guys filling in for other young guys, that “finish them” instinct is simply lacking. Closing out games in the NFL isn’t as simple as we all tend to think. There’s a reason the Bills have lead in many games this year and still find themselves with a 3-6 record. On the opposite end of the spectrum the Chiefs have found themselves with the leagues easiest schedule and have played a multitude of back-up QB’s, but guess what? They’re winning every game they’re supposed to. That’s why they’re 9-0. Nothing to do with any conspiracies. The funniest part about all of this to me is that the same fans, who are pointing their finger at the NFL and are faulting the Chiefs for playing the schedule they are given, are the same folks who would undoubtedly defend the Bills to the core if the situations were reversed. Can you imagine the outcry from Bills fans if the team was 9-0 and the people were criticizing how and why they got there???  Don’t even pretend like we’d take the high road either. People mean well, they really do, but this tendency to blame losing on someone else is laughable at best. Perhaps we need to take a look internally at why we’re losing, before we blame the NFL. There seems to have been a whole lot of shooting ourselves in the foot so far this season. Then again what do I know? I’m sure there’s a file somewhere in DC containing info on Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Area 51 & the Buffalo Bills.
