In 2006, the Chargers were given the opportunity to star on ‘Hard Knocks’ for an in-depth look at then-head coach Marty Schottenheimer and his up-and-coming squad. It wasn’t to be as general manager A.J. Smith declined HBO’s offer and never looked back.

Although this year’s edition is no longer up for grabs — thanks to the Dolphins’ willingness to do what no other team would — Smith reinforced his stance against the Emmy-winning summer series.

Smith told U-T San Diego this week that the Chargers are ‘not eligible’ to appear on ‘Hard Knocks’.

“We were not contacted, because we are not eligible to be on the show,” Smith said Thursday morning. “None of us have our Screen Actors Guild cards.”

It’s a classic quip by Smith, whose sly sense of humor is lost on some. Underneath it all, however, he’s long said to have disliked the show, which he views as “fake” and, considering the acting that takes place when the cameras start rolling, a bit pretentious.

So let this be a lesson, HBO: you might’ve found your guinea pig this year, but don’t even think about heading down to sunny San Diego in 2013. That is, unless you like hearing the word “no.”
