Where to find answer to 49ers’ receiver needs? Once again, the 49ers are in the market for a game-changing receiver. This is single-handedly the most important position the 49ers need to fill this offseason. If the 49ers want to keep pace in the NFC west and to return to the Super Bowl they need to add an impact wide receiver who stretches the field. The 49ers organization is a name synonymous with legendary receivers — Jerry Rice, John Taylor and Terrell Owens to name a few. Since T.O.’s departure, the 49ers have not had a dynamic game-breaking receiver. Michael Crabtree is close, but he is still a possession receiver. Anquan Boldin is also a possession receiver and is not a long-term option for the 49ers. This year the 49ers were without Michael Crabtree for a majority of the season. When Crabtree returned in December he immediately made a visible impact. Not only did Crabtree help free Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis, but he also functioned as a mental security blanket for Colin Kaepernick. Despite Crabtree’s ability to create separation and find ways to get open, he does not have the over-the-top playmaking abilities of a Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green, or Dez Bryant. Long story short, Crabtree is a phenomenal athlete and a tremendous compliment to the offense, but he is not the answer to the 49ers’ needs at wide receiver. So where should the 49ers go to find the next great receiver? Is it a current player on the 49ers roster? Is it a free agent? Or is it a draft pick? Let’s explore the possibilities.
