With the semi-surprising firing of Lovie Smith just a few hours ago, the rumor mill is already churning potential candidates to take over the Monsters of the Midway. One name that has been floated early is former Steelers’ Head Coach Bill Cowher, who has spent the past four seasons in the CBS studios. Cowher’s name always seems to come up when the coaching carousel starts spinning, but there hasn’t been a real “marquis” position that would appeal to him until now. Chicago already has the type of ball-hawking, big hitting defense that Cowher was known for in his Steelers days, and with the likely firing of Ken Whisenhunt and his staff (including another former Steelers sideline stalwart in Russ Grimm) from the Arizona Cardinals, the Bears would likely be able to assemble at least some of the pieces of the old Steelers staff from the 90’s and early 2000’s. It’s still just a name being floated by sources around the league, but it almost makes too much sense not to happen.
