Fox Sports:
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Sports Writer Marcus Spears was prepared to accept the possibility that he might have played his last game for the Dallas Cowboys.
Spears missed the second half of last season because of a calf injury. Plus, the Cowboys had salary cap issues and hoped to retain Stephen Bowen, the defensive end who became the starter after Spears got hurt.
When Bowen took a five-year deal from Washington, Spears suddenly had a new five-year contract from the Cowboys.
Spears says he might not have been the first guy the Cowboys wanted back, but that everybody was excited when he agreed to terms. He says he understands the business aspect and is happy to remain with the team that drafted him in the first round six years ago.
