With the recent hire of James Franklin to Penn State, the Vanderbilt Commodores are looking for a new head coach. According to ESPN’s Joe Schad, Vanderbilt is considering Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason. Stanford DC Derek Mason interviews with Vanderbilt middle of this week — Joe Schad (@schadjoe) January 13, 2014 Mason has a coaching resume that dates back to the mid 90’s, including a stint in the NFL as the Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach. Mason has been at Stanford since 2010, he was the defensive backs coach before being promoted to associate head coach/defensive coordinator. Mason has put together some very good defenses. The Stanford defense has improved overall each year Mason has been the DC. In 2011 they were 28in total defense, in 2012 they were 20th, and last season the Stanford Cardinal were 16th. Mason has proven himself a very good defensive coach and if it is not Vanderbilt, I am sure he will be getting an offer from another school.   #Stanford DC Derek Mason is on #Vanderbilt‘s preliminary list of candidates, per source. Interview list prob finalized tomorrow — Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerCBS) January 11, 2014   In my opinion, Mason is a very good candidate for Vandy. He will need to hire some good offensive coaches but I do not think that should be much of a problem. As long as Mason recruits well, he could take the Vandy program to another level.   Follow Me On Twitter: @JOnTheSidelines The post Stanford DC Will Interview for Vanderbilt Job appeared first on UTN Sports.
