Steelers' Connor Heyward Is Motivated To Be A Difference Maker For The Team's Offense In 2023, Regardless Of The Position
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

When the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Connor Heyward in the sixth-round of the 2022 NFL Draft, there were many who questioned the pick as it was unsure of the role he would play in the team's offense. During his time at Michigan State, Heyward was a "Swiss Army Knife" of sorts, playing multiple positions such as running back, fullback, and tight end. With the Steelers in 2022, he played mostly in a traditional, in-line tight end role, appearing in all 17 games. While Heyward's stats as a rookie do not jump off the page, the former sixth-round pick may see an increased number of snaps in 2023.

During a recent interview following OTAs, Heyward detailed his comfortability within the Steelers' offense and described how his second season with the team is far different from his rookie campaign.

"A lot different. I feel more comfortable just coming into the building, let alone on the field. I feel like I have a lot more confidence in myself, the team, the scheme. I feel like I'm playing faster, and I'm not thinking as much," said Heyward.

The Steelers Will Utilize Heyward's Versatility Heavily In 2023

Those outside of the Steelers' organization and fandom are likely not aware of how prevalent Heyward will be in the team's offense next season. With the offense running an increased amount of "12 personnel" during the second half of the 2022 season, combined with Heyward likely assuming the "de-facto" role of fullback, the former Michigan State standout has the opportunity to be a serious difference maker in 2023.

At only 6'0" tall, Heyward lacks ideal size at the tight end position. However, he more than makes up for it with having strong hands as well as an impressive ability to run after the catch. When asked about how he sees his role changing this upcoming season, Heyward envisions himself playing more snaps in 2023.

"I think it can change for the better. I don't know how much, but I feel like it will kind of be the same role, but hopefully a little bit more. That kind of is on me, keep on putting in the work and the time, and you're gonna get out what you put in," answered Heyward.

Barring a late offseason signing, the Steelers will be without their 2022 fullback, Derek Watt. While Watt being brought back is certainly a possibility, the team has already discussed the idea of Heyward playing some snaps there in 2023 in addition to his responsibilities as a tight end. With Heyward essentially taking the roster spot of Watt, this will allow the team to keep Pat Freiermuth, Zach Gentry, and 2023 third-round pick, Darnell Washington on the 53-man roster.

What Are Realistic Expectations For Heyward This Upcoming Season?

Entering his second season in the NFL, it is not unrealistic to believe that Heyward will improve from his 2022 form, where he hauled in 12 receptions for 151 yards and one touchdown. Furthermore, as Heyward points out in the interview, the offense as a whole seems to be in a much better state now than it was a year ago. Starting quarterback, Kenny Pickett, who was also a part of the team's 2022 NFL Draft class, is poised to lead the Steelers' offense that is absolutely loaded at nearly every position.

Needless to say, with Heyward playing multiple positions, he will likely be on the field more going in to 2023. While he will certainly not be the focal point of the offense, he will have ample opportunity to showcase his talents next season. Furthermore, Heyward proved his worth on the special teams unit during his rookie campaign and will be asked to do so again in year two. With all this in consideration, there is strong reason to believe that the Steelers made a wise choice with their sixth-round selection in 2022. If all goes according to plan, Heyward may be a fan favorite in Pittsburgh in no time.
